Having a good teacher/mentor is imperative! If he/she is a decent teacher, they will be able to guide you along in the right direction. Go for it!

I taught my former students to use the absolute least pressure possible to get a tone. But the others are right, especially the listening/modeling parts. What's REALLY good is playing along with a recording. Find sheet music that matches a cd. Good luck!

a good reed, mouthpiece helps, the best general all around mouthpiece is a selmer c*. ligature...hmmm....personally i like rovner ligs. but alot of it is just holding long tones and trying to make it sound better, as well as tuning and intonation. instrument quality also plays a small factor

I've been playing alto sax for a few years, and I know that the key to getting a good tone is by simply practicing, once you get a feel for it and know how to get good breath support it becomes easier. I'd say, make sure it's in tune, and practice. I know that I had horrible tone when I first started.
