What is the average for a guy? I know it can go up to the 20s.. my voice changed when I was 13, now its an average voice not high, not low..but when I sing there's just some notes I struggle with, I also have a vocal coach.. Right now I am 16, so I think my voice might be done changing

Hello John, Be sure you read Ms. Lynn's entry on this list. Mine will likely not be as helpful as hers. The voice (larynx) is the last organ of the body to mature. Our female friends usually have it together considerably before we do (in many respects)! In the process of the "mutation" that voice teacher Lynn mentioned, there can be a lengthy developmental period in which the muscles of the voice develop as the singer learns to use his/her voice within the range that is accessible and comfortable. While you may feel that, at 16, your voice is "done changing" because it has altered from being a soprano to a baritone, there is actually a WHOLE LOT MORE developing and maturing that takes place in the coming years. It is important that in these years (16-21) you are establishing GOOD SINGING HABITS, because it is likely going to be in the years that follow these that the range and character of your voice really blossoms. Getting back to the subject of the "vocal organ" maturing: The housing of the voice (thyroid bone) and the structure that holds it together - to which the muscles are attached - is quite "pliable" at 16, making it hard work for a young man your age to make those large clear ringing tones you hear from older singers. Those ligaments harden with age, giving increased stability to the muscles of the voice. This hardening is part of the "changing" or "maturing" process. In a woman's voice the ligaments have reached their "hardening" point by about age 28, and this takes several years longer for most men - usually until about age 35. If you will work under a good voice teacher so as to establish good habits, you will help your voice develop to its potential. Over the years you will notice that your range expands, the sound you produce will become consistently clear and rich, and you will have expressive control to make strong energetic sounds, and lyric quiet ones without getting unnecessarily breathy. This is all part of the "changing" that has already begun as your voice matures over the coming years. So, PURELY PHYSICALLY, your voice will be "fully developed" around 35. But to tell the truth, it's not static, and you'll find that your voice will continue to work in ever freeing ways if you have learned to sing with good habits - those that you learn and establish during the next 6 or so years. Note: this is a gradual process that takes time. There's no way around that. Have fun singing.

Usually between 14 and 21. My voice never really cracked. It just became deep over the course of the summer before my senior year of high school. (I was 16)

It'll be serious training, but you might get lucky coz u got a few yrs left possibly. Mine started breaking around 16 but didn't completely finish until almost 18. there are notes i can't control that should be within range. Don't give up though!

At around the age of 25 years, the voice is fully developed to its fullest extent and only goes down from there.

it depends on your own body. Some young men have done their major growth by the time they are 16, but there's a slow, last phase that might take another couple of years to settle things in. some fellows start and end later. It's very personal. Most vocal authorities agree that 18 is a good round number to start vocal instruction, but I don't see why you can't start now, always assuming that your teacher is a person whom you trust implicitly. ( If you have doubts about the integrity of your teacher's methods or person, check things out. If it turns out the person is not what and who they say they are- get moving. If you ruin your voice now, it will take that many more years to fix If you are one of the lucky ones who have got the right person at the right time- full speed ahead!) Training through the remnants of your "mutation" ( yeah, that's what the medical name for it is) shouldn't pose any difficulties unless you start the hare-brained notion that you are going out to recapture all your lost boy soprano notes.... Stay in your mid. range, and get that settled in first, before you go experimenting with highs and lows. learn all you can about proper breathing, vowel placement and tracking, and other fun resonance usages. Take the time to learn to read music, if you don't already. It's a sad sight to see "professional" singers having to be spoon-fed their notes when a little mental exertion would have made things go more smoothly. there's no room or excuse for laziness in the business nowadays- Best wishes and keep on singing
