How do you transpose a Bass clef Baritone part into treble cleff?

  • Hello, I have just started playing baritone (for marching band) and the music is written in bass clef, but I am a trumpet player who is just now learning. So how do I transpose the baritone part from bass clef to treble clef? I believe that it has something to do from an octave up and then from concert c to a concert Bb, but I don't know. What are the steps I should follow to transpose this piece so that I can play along until I become comfortable with bass clef? Thanks, NeoC

    To transpose the part so that it reads and fingers just like a trumpet part, you take it up a 9th (an octave plus a whole step). This takes into account the octave difference between the two instruments and the B-flat transposition. This is how published Baritone TC parts are written.

Ok, I see what you mean. I play trumpet, but have never had to transpose anything yet. But my friends (who always do trios & quartets with me) are always transposing their music. So I will try my best to help. The bottom line on the bass clef is G, so to move it to the treble clef you transpose down 1 1/2 steps. So a C on the bass clef = A on the treble.
