How do I produce vibrato?

Explain the proper way to produce vibrato when singing (voice majors please).......?

  • Answer:

Wow, lots of misinformation here. A vibrato is produced by a quick, even contractions of the diaphram while sustaining a pitch. The purpose of the vibrato is to produce a 'warm' tone. What this means is that the sound is not boring to listen to, just like a speaker who uses inflection in his voice well is much less boring to listen to than someone who speaks in a monotone. The vibrato must be even, the demi-quavers or single fluctuations made by your diaphram should be measured and should not detract from the overall quality of your voice. You should also try to do some studying as to where a vibrato is appropriate. When singing in a large choir a vibrato is not necessary, when performing a solo with sustained passages a vibrato is needed. If you are going to try to learn this on your own I would suggest recording yourself. Many times the sound that we produce is not the sound that we think we are producing. A tape or digital recording is sometimes eye opening, be sure to listen critically. A final word of caution. Do NOT produce the vibrato with your throat. This is a short cut that can do damage to your voice in the long run.

Some voices naturally have more vibrato than others. But, you can manipulate this aspect of your voice with breathing and using your diaphragm. Try this: sing a single, comfortable pitch. Slowly contract your diaphragm. This should produce a vibrato, especially near the end of the breath. Pay attention to your body and what this feels like. Try to reproduce this earlier and earlier in each successive try. It probably won't be especially pretty at first. Like anything, it takes practice. Don't go crazy. Lots of current singers relay too much on this sound. Develop the natural tone of your voice before you try to develop tricks.

I don't think you can really and fully communicate this online. Get a voice teacher! If you are breathing properly when you sing, you should have vibrato. Don't force it! And don't make it come from your throat. Don't force anything when you sing, or you could end up with vocal noguls. I had those, they're not pleasant.

I am not a voice major, but I do know what vibrato means. I seriously thought it was a natural talent, and not practiced. thank you for teaching me something!
