What if you only have $100 for a flute?
-
I see so many of these "Do not buy cheap flutes" posts. Okay, which is better for the poor, financially restricted individual who wants to continue to buy food, but still wants to play a flute? The choice being given to those of us who can only afford about $100 for a flute is "You are not permitted to play a flute!" I just want to play for pleasure. I will not be playing every day. I will not be playing professionally. I am the merest beginner. But being somewhat handicapped, I take pleasure in my hobbies. And music can be a great pleasure. But of the cheap choices available, I would like to know which is the best cheap choice. So of those flutes available for $80-$120, what would be my best choice? Weimar, Anaxa, Medini, Cecilio, Lazarro, Merano, Crescent, Crystalcello, Skylark, Unbranded Chinese? (I can feel you shuddering from here.) Some have said buy used. I would not know if a used Yamaha were good or unrepairable. And a used brand name flute still goes for three hundred or more and then I may have to pay to get it repaired. What is that, another hundred or so? I had a cheap Cecilio that I had a lot of fun with. It worked fine. I played it for months - on and off. I gave it to my daughter when she wanted a flute. So now I need to replace it. Any economical suggestions?

I was with my mom in arkansas recently. we were flea market and garage sale-ing when we came upon 2 flutes for sale. The lady selling the flutes said they belonged to her son, a recent high schood grad. They were from his HS band years. They were for sale for $10 and $15 respectively. My mom is notorious for buying used instruments (in case the grandkids want to start a band). Anyway, we came home and went to "about.com" (a favorite for learning about any instrument or hobby). we were able to look up how to put it together, how to hold it, to care for it, etc. i will ask her what brand she bought. i would start by checking out sites like about.com, to learn basic things to look for.
