Here's where I hope you'll take my advice with a grain of salt. Please don't let this stop you from following your dreams, but I do at least want to let you know what to watch out for when you start. I personally don't scream unless it's a one-off thing in a murder mystery, but I do know that metal "screamers" who don't lose their voices have different-than-average vocal cords. A good bet would be to see if there are any voice lessons you can take in the area that wouldn't mind incorporating some healthy screaming lessons. A solid singing background will help you not to damage your voice. If no vocal coach will touch you with a ten foot pole due to your desire for screaming (you may have trouble with this), you can look for an acting coach. Some acting coaches have training about screaming onstage without hurting yourself. At the end of the day, though, if you find yourself losing your voice often, find a way to give your voice a rest(and always drink lots of water to help your cords regenerate!). If you lose your voice through damage one too many times, you'll develop callouses on your vocal cords (like ones you get on your feet from bad shoes) which will prevent you from making any noise at all and will require surgery. So go for it! I'm serious(even after all that)! Just remember to pay attention to what the health of your voice is telling you, and you'll be fine.

Metal screaming will tear your vocal folds up really badly if you push hard. You could always try for Death Metal growling, which is more like a burp. I've been growling for 10 years, and still have a range of Bass to contratenor (that's a lot). The harsh screams of mainstream metal (for instance, Atreyu's Lip GLoss and Black) gives you a singing career of about 10 years before you'll need some sort of vocal surgery. Henry Rollins brings this up in one of his spoken word albums. NOW for my secret tip... If you can come up with a good sounding growly whisper, there is such a thing as microphones. Getting up real close and "faking" the vocal breakup with a cranked mic might get you wjhat you want. I think Phil ANselmo from Pantera did that a bit on the uh...second album. I'm remembering "F##KING HOSTIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII… and thinking to myself "that sounds really close to the mic...." Try this, with maybe a little distortion (A LITTLE) inline and see what you get. Baby those chords, tho. You'll want them later.
