Depending on your age, your voice may be changing. When I started singing at age 8 I was a soprano 1, and when for a show first year of college, my choir director asked if I would sing tenor. Voices do change overtime, even women's voices. Before you sing, drink lots of water. Not juice or soda or even flavoured water. Plain water will clear your throat of any junk, mucus and food particles lingering around. Also, you can try opening your throat more by pressing your tongue down with two fingers. Make sure you don't gag yourself! Practice your scales, go up a note each time and don't go up until you're perfectly comfortable each time hitting that note. Use lots of air, and get lots of stomach support. Also, your voice takes a good three hours or so to warm up after waking up. If you notice that you've sing later in the day or at night, this is why. Practice and use your voice as much as you can before singing to relax your vocal chords, but don't not overuse it! No yelling, screaming or any of that jazz. Otherwise, you may have to accept that you sing a lower part. Nothing to be ashamed about! A choir can't go on without altos! Good luck and God bless :)

As a singer, you SHOULD NEVER yell! It is harsh on your vocal folds and can cuase systs and vocal nodules. Drink plenty of water and give your voice a break. Vocal fatigue (or the over use of the voice) is common is singers. Give a few days and everything will be back to normal.

Stop singing for a while, stop yelling period. Don't yell if you're a singer. I used to sing at church. Then I had my kids and the constant talking to them and the shouting has damaged my voice. I sing at home now but I'm not singing at church anymore. Your voice needs a break.
