How can I sort strings in multiple languages?

What sort of strings should I use to string a 10 string harp lyre?

  • Preferably metal strings, I intend to use the CDEFGABCDE tuning. A few ideas on gauges would be appreciated.

  • Answer:

String composition, tension and gauge will all have to be taken into consideration; it isn't a simple thing. Be aware that metal strings will need a higher string tension than nylon ones, and will be more prone to breakage than nylon. Is your lyre made to carry that sort of tension? If it isn't specifically built that way, you will run the risk of damaging the frame if you put metal strings on. I'd suggest trying nylon first, to see what sort of tension you might need. You can then experiment with differing gauges, so that the strings are all tensioned about equally; this will make playing a bit easier, as well as distributing the tension equitably through the lyre's frame.
