I would suggest looking at the designs of the Galli Bibienas a theatrical stage design family. You can get a copy of a monograph on some of their more famous designs in a Dover book or look them up online. Also write the Italian Cultural Institute in New York and you can do more research on the subject at the New York Public Library at Lincoln Center. Also the Italian Embassy in Washington, DC has a Cultural Attache who also can send you information besides the Cultural Institute in New York. From a costuming standpoint you might also wish to contact the Cirque du Soleil in either Vegas or Montreal as they use comedia as a basis for their costume design. There is also a library with the International Theater Institute in New York and the United States Institute for Theater Technology (USITT).
