What opportunities are availible in the performing arts for high school students?

    State Solo/Ensemble contests - they chances to perform and receive input from people at a higher level (music; any HS band/choir director should be able to give you more info), but I think there are competitions in any performing art. Also state or regional youth orchestras or choirs! Auditions required, but they perform at a high level then. Some colleges have classes or ensembles for community members as well that you could join. You'd have to contact the college near you for more info. Of course your school dance/drama/choir/band/orchestra program. Even if you're not in it, you can talk to the teacher involved to get ideas of where to go from there. Have fun!

Not much in a school situation. I do semi-professional theatre and I have also done school shows but I think the best opportunities come from community and professional theatre.

community theatre...hopefully your school has a good fine arts department as well.

i don't know where you are located. There are some high schools geared for the Arts. i attended the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham. Look them up on the web. They accept out of state students. In addition to yoiur regular High School studies, you receive specialized training in your artistic field - music, art, drama dance, creative writing.

Most high schools have some sort of drama and music programs. My advice: try everything, you might surprised at what you're good at and enjoy doing.
