The best way to acquire free books is the check them out of the library. If your local branch does not have a copy, the staff can order it from another branch so you can pick it up at your desired location. If you prefer to read the book online, the library may have an electronic copy available. The Twilight series is so popular that most public libraries have purchased multiple copies and you should not have difficulty finding it. Also, check with your school library. Good luck!

Nowhere legal. Legal new eBooks at New Free Books.

the first chapter is one Steph's site (http://stepheniemeyer.com/newmoon.html) and at the bottom of the page there's an audio exert.

You should try something... go to the library website. Sometimes they do this for members. Great book by the way!

Why don't you just reserve it at your local library? If you have several libraries in your area, you could reserve it at each one, and read whichever one comes in fastest. Who knows, maybe one library would actually have the book checked in at the moment, and you could get it right away. You could also post a request for a copy of the book on Freecycle (you have to join your local group, which is free, but takes a day or two to process initially). This would be for a real copy of the book that someone doesn't want anymore, which you could pick up. Depending on your local group's rules, you may have to post an offer of something you have to give away before you can post a request. It's a good site, though. http://www.freecycle.org/ Another possibility is http://www.bookcrossing.com/ Again, this would be for a real copy of the book, and would take time. I'm not sure how easy it is to get a specific title at a certain time. You could also post a request on your local craigslist.org site, for a real copy of the book that someone might be willing to give away. If you have any money at all, you might also call around to a few local used bookstores to see if they have it and if so, how much it is.
