Do you think there were public schools in the Harry Potter world?
-
We all know there is Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang, but they were all private boarding schools that I'm sure probably coasted a fortune to go to. And it doesn't make sense for there to only be three schools in all of Europe to educate 100,000+ witches and wizards. So do you think there must have been some other less popular schools that are more like the schools most Muggle teenagers go to everyday? And if so, how do you think that sort of thing would work? Hogwarts makes sense because the students just stay there all year long and only need transportation twice a year. But for a public school, students would need transportation to and from school everyday, which would be difficult to do with hundreds of wizard children without drawing tons of attention. How do you think the matter would work, if it even happens at all in the wizarding world? And how do you think the Weasleys can afford to send their seven children to Hogwarts every year? I mean, I know there's financial aid and stuff, but really, an expensive boarding school like Hogwarts that provides huge meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday equivalent to a Thanksgiving meal, and has extremely fantastic teachers that are masters in their subjects and must have gone through many years of college (or whatever they do in the wizarding world), and, well, you know what Hogwarts is like. A school like that wouldn't be cheap even with financial aid. How do you think the Weasleys, or any average wizarding family with a lot of children, can afford to send their kids to Hogwarts? And as long as I'm asking... why do you think there are never transfer students at Hogwarts? All right, I'm done asking questions.

Answer:
This has been answered fantastically already but I'll just chip in my two cents. I've always been under the impression that Hogwarts was the only wizarding school in Britain. It was either Hogwarts, send them overseas, or home school. I distinctly remember a line in Deathly Hallows by Lupin. Here I'll copy it “Attendance is now compulsory for every young witch and wizard,” he replied. “That was announced yesterday. It’s a change, because it was never obligatory before. Of course, nearly every witch and wizard in Britain has been educated at Hogwarts, but their parents had the right to teach them at home or send them abroad if they preferred." So basically, nuh no public schools. I always though Hogwarts was kind of a public school. I honestly don't think there were tuition fee's for it. I mean Harry inherited a small fortune yes, but with no parents or income you'd think that would of been used up by the end of his Hogwart's years. But nope, at no point is tuition even mentioned. Actually it is in HBP by Tom Riddle - “I haven’t got any money.” “That is easily remedied,” said Dumbledore, drawing a leather money-pouch from his pocket. “There is a fund at Hogwarts for those who require assistance to buy books and robes. You might have to buy some of your spellbooks and so on secondhand, but —” So from what I can gather Hogwarts was free to anyone that was accepted, with them only having to pay for spell books, robes etc. It makes you wonder where Hogwart's gets its funds huh? I mean the teachers would have to be paid. Where does the food come from? Sure the house elves make it for free but don't get me started on Gamp's laws... we all know you can't create food from magic.... But I don't think there'd be the general upkeep expenses etc. that is around in most schools. I mean, gosh, it's magical. Maybe the ministry allocates money to it? And there seems to be a lot of lonely old people in the magical world who seem very attached to Hogwarts. I can imagine a lot of people would leave everything to Hogwarts. I guess it all comes to Jo's number failure. She's admitted she's screwed up numbers wise in Harry Potter. I mean there are 10 people in Gryffindor in Harry's year. So approx. 40 people in his entire year. Times seven years equals 280 people at Hogwarts, not the approximately 1000 that Jo suggests. Plus, how can that small a younth population represent the wizarding world with a government, hospital, shops, etc. this is probably another symptom of that. Or just me going on a weird rant maybe. Ok gotta go watch Darren Criss on Glee now. IT'S HARRY FREAKIN' POTTER!

There is a fund at Hogwarts for poor children, hence why orphaned Tom Riddle was able to attend, as well as the entire Weasley family. Books and supplies are a problem, but I imagine scholarships exist for those in dire need. Schooling isn't an option in the magical world, they need to be trained. There really aren't that many wizarding families left, they're dying out (much to the pure blood's dismay, they would have already if not for mating with muggles). Hogwarts is sufficient for Great Britain, there's really not that many students in Hogwarts if you consider 10 students per house, per year. (Ron, Harry, Dean, Seamus, Neville for the Gryffindor boys, and so on.) As for transfer students, you need to enroll beginning at 11, and since Hogwarts encompasses such a large area, the only chance of transferring is if someone moved into the country. This is possible, and probably does occur, but just hasn't been seen in the books.
Well, i mean it was mentioned that there was Salem Witch Academy in America, and there's like a place called D.A.D.A ( Some kind of dramatic wizardry arts school) And yes, I guess there was a school funding for poor people, but actually, the Weasley family isn't poor. They just have too many children that they can afford. They're not actually poor. For a regular sized family, they make a decent amount of money.
Yes, because of the muggles. where would they go to school and there are more normal people than the wizzards.
