What is the Bizarre creature in North Carolina Sewer?

Have you ever invented a creature/monster, for a story?

  • I have invented my own kind of aliens for one of my first stories. [quite a bad story] but anyway have you made up a creature of any sort to be in your book? I've got a sort of sewer creature on my mind, and I've had dreams which contain many monsters. Do you make up a random name for your creature? Or do you do a lot of research to find a name that fits? ;D

  • Answer:

I just make up a name that sounds good... For my fantasy series, I invented the Kreztalin, who are tall, thin humanoids made of obsidian (a glossy black stone). They're servants of an evil god and are powerful magicians. I came up with the name long before I had a race of creatures to fit it. I'm not entirely happy with the name, but it'll do until something better comes along. For a science fiction novel, I invented some creatures called "dummies". They can mimic the appearance of any human, but if you cut one open, their insides are a solid white rubbery substance, like a dummy in a shop window - hence the name. They're a sort of cross between the Autons in Doctor Who and the agents in The Matrix. For another science fiction novel (not yet written), I've invented an alien species called the Borss (which I know sounds too much like the Borg in Star Trek). They're basically cone-shaped, about six feet across and four feet high. They have a dozen retractable tentacles around the bottom of the cone, and they move about on hundreds of little feet underneath the cone. They're much older and more technologically advanced than humans, and are largely uninterested in us, except to stop us from meddling in their affairs. Unfortunately, they haven't been very clear about what constitutes "meddling"...

I've created cultures and creatures, then either thought up names for them or taken them from similar myths. For example, my two-tailed cat-people are nekomata, and evil wailing spirits are called banshees. As long as it doesn't completely deviate from the original being (i.e. sparkling creatures that aren't afraid of the sun or drink human blood), creative license is okay. I think the most original creation I've made were Cecropians, these butterfly-people.

Yup, for my sci fi novel Pars I made up several aliens: Nothribi - 2x larger than humans, look like a cross between an ape and a crab. Bad tempered. Ngalant - parasatized version of a Nothribi. Generally more pleasant. Plasocid - stationary beings who project their minds psychically into the mobile squid-like anocid. Grekakki - always born in groups of seven, who remain linked psychically no matter how far apart they may get. Shepherds - exiled by the Grekakki after losing a war, they pass down memories by consuming the memory organs of their dead. For the names I just think about them for awhile until I find something that seems to fit.

I came up with the Cohaliquesk. Additionally, I came up with the human subspecies known as homo canis. Additionally, I came up with five different schools of magical thought. Research is for ******* with no imagination.
