How can I be agile and strong?

How can I make my elves different?

  • Okay I'm writing a fantasy book, bearing a little similarity to Lord of the Rings and Eragon, and of course I want to have elves in my book, but how can I make them unique? I mean if they are fast, strong, and agile like in every other book, people will get bored. The rest of my book however, is entirely original. I would still like to keep the immortality and pointed ears though, I just need to change something else to make them unique. If you give me your name I'll be sure to credit you in the thank you section of my book. It will be called Adarman: Clash of Elements.

    well here are some questions to ask yourself when trying to create a fantasy creature... even one that already exists that way it is yours and yours alone.. Do they have Powers? (elves are none for healing powers in some books) What are these Powers? What do they look like? (elves don't have to have pointy ears [oh yeah you want that...oops] and short stature) What craft or trade are they known for? (try to avoid archery too many elves are good at that) What do they wear? Where do they live? What language do they speak? Who are their enemies/ ales? how has this creature been shown in other books? Do I want to use some of that image? If so what traits am i using and where did it come from? well these are some of the questions that have helped me in the past... hope it helps you... Great ...i like that title... so original FYI nothing is completely original so do not worry... if your story captures an audience then it really does not matter that your elves are just like any other elf in fiction...stop worrying so much everything will be fine... you sound like a brilliant writer!

What I've done in my fantasy novels that I'm writing is made the elves into separate races, much how humans have Asian, Black, and White. For instance, High Elves, Dark Elves, etc. While this is not inherently "unique" per se, it does add flavor and variety and you can give each race different abilities, affinities, physical description, etc. For instance, my Dark Elves came in a variety of skin tones from brown to blue to purple to dark grey and black, are not inherently evil nor do they live underground. Elves are not strong from my understanding, unless by strong you mean magical affinity. Elves are physically inferior to humans, shorter, lithe, and fragile. They are faster and more agile as a result. So by different or unique do you mean physical? Or some attribute?

Maybe you could make them a head taller than a normal human being. Or you could make their skin a different texture (fuzzy, cracked, covered in a slimy substance, abnormally wrinkly, etc.). Or you could make them have more than a normal amount of body parts (three arms, eight fingers, etc.). Maybe you could make their eyes orange, and their hair could be so long that it would reach the back of their ankles. Maybe you could make them smell very good...or on the other hand...very bad. You could make them be able to fly, or something to that effect. You could make the elves' wounds heal very slowly, or quickly for that matter. You could make all of them extremely allergic to something as common as water. You could make them so that they cannot breathe. Or maybe they could be unnaturally fat or thin. Hope I could help. People already have an idea of what elves are. If you make them very different, then they aren't really elves, are they?

If you look at books like Lord of the Rings and Eragon, the elves are very much like humans. De-humanizing them a bit would make them original. You could make them smaller than humans, or to have different body builds, or even not be as intelligent (or Intelligent in different ways). You could also give them a special property or power that's unusual in elves, like the ability to change form or to read minds.

Since your title is going to be Clash of the Elements you could separate the elves into groups and give each group power over a certain element (fire, water, air, earth, etc.). You could add some interest by having a few elves that can control several, or all of the elements, but they don't know it right away. I would keep other elvish traits, because they are sort of necessary.

Maybe they could be born with a certain mark on their body which could show what power they have, or if they're even powerful at all; if they're good or bad, or if they should be destroyed immediately. Make everything depend on this mark- Can you imagine where the story can go with that? A child of the king elf could be born with a powerful mark, but an evil warlock could say that the child will bring both shame, and pain to their kingdom, which could result in the murder of the child (or the casting away).
