What book cover would you say was worth hanging on a wall as a work of art?
-
Which one, which ones? Do you have any book-cover-inspired pieces of art hanging around anywhere? Don't limit yourselves to hangable pieces, it can be anything inspired by cover art, that you made or bought or had made for you. What's your favorite book cover? I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours . . - - - - - - - - This question is brought to you by http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... and the letter 'A.'

Answer:
I actually do have pictures of books throughout my apartment. Next to my bedroom I have a poster of the cover for Catch-22. Above my reading chair I have four prints of Man Without a Country by Vonnegut (the orange cover), American Psycho by Ellis (the original cover), A Clock Work Orange by Burgess (the orange cover), and God Knows by Heller. They are arranged in a square. By my television I have an 8x10 of Fahrenheit 451 by Bradbury. I think it's a funny reminder. The trick is to get them framed nicely. I prefer mat finishes on the blown up ones, and glossy for the 8x10 or lower.

I don't necessarily have a favorite, but some I like include: The Darkest Evening of the Year - http://www.amazon.com/Darkest-Evening-Year-Dean-Koontz/dp/0553589121/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232758776&sr=1-1 Luncheon of the Boating Party - http://www.amazon.com/Luncheon-Boating-Party-Susan-Vreeland/dp/B001E96KJQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232759312&sr=1-1 (You can't tell from this, but the painting continues around the back, so you get the entire work. Getting the print of the painting would be more to the point, though.) Maps and Legends - http://www.amazon.com/Maps-Legends-Michael-Chabon/dp/1932416897/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232759397&sr=1-1 Where the Wild Things Are - http://www.amazon.com/Where-Wild-Things-Maurice-Sendak/dp/0060254920/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232759430&sr=1-4 The World Without Us - http://www.amazon.com/World-Without-Us-Alan-Weisman/dp/0312427905/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232759594&sr=1-1 A Child's Garden of Verses - http://www.amazon.com/Childs-Garden-Verses-Robert-Stevenson/dp/0689823827/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232759721&sr=1-1 (actually several of the different covers are nice) The Secret Garden - http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Garden-Frances-Hodgson-Burnett/dp/0763631612/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232759821&sr=1-3 (and several variations) A Christmas Carol - http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Carol-Charles-Dickens/dp/0064436063/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232759863&sr=1-10 (several variations of this one, too) No covers on the wall, though. (Like reader, too many shelves for picture room.) ***The Tolkien covers are really nice and so is the Ferris wheel. I also like the photo on Cold Mountain - http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Mountain-Novel-Charles-Frazier/dp/B001O9CBQM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232764458&sr=1-1 ***Endless Night http://www.amazon.com/Endless-Night-Agatha-Christie/dp/0312981384/ref=ed_oe_p would probably give me nightmares because of the grayscale and the dolls. (I like the Ruby Holler cover, too. How did your painting turn out?) ***reader, The World Without Us cover is pretty cool, isn't it? The cover of Cold Mountain gives you feel for the story. Though I wouldn't want it on my wall, the cover of Sometimes a Great Notion http://www.amazon.com/Sometimes-Great-Notion-Penguin-Classics/dp/0143039865/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232769668&sr=1-1 is oddly appealing. ***That's the cover I have, reader. If you get it, how many copies will that make? (I'll bet you'll beat my number of copies of Pride and Prejudice!) It does suit the story, doesn't it? *Yes, you've topped my five copies. There were more copies, but I gave two entire sets of Jane Austen's novels to a retirement community to help with their library. By the way, arabesque, that Cover Browser site is really something. Both that one and the other one with the multitude of covers would take hours to browse through. Two more sites to save. The downside to saving so many great sites is it's hard to find them when you want to check them again. :)

Honestly? I don't have room for wall art. Every open wall in my personal space is filled with either a bookcase or a CD shelf. So I guess I consider books themselves to be wall art! And insulation too! I used to have a poster on the inside of my door that was a blowup of a bookcase full of pretty old books similar to those in my avatar. I thought it was funny to put a picture of a bookcase in the one place I couldn't put an actual bookcase. I should put that back up, come to think of it. Interestingly, I don't really like wall art with text in it unless it's integral to the image (like the titles on my shelf poster). I don't like prints that have gallery and museum info on them or anything like that, so I guess that even though there a lot of books whose covers I like very much I probably wouldn't want to hang them on my wall. I know someone who does though and they look cool and suit him perfectly so maybe I'd like it better than I think I would. I didn't think I'd like sushi either until I tried it. Still, I have that wall space issue so I'll probably never know. ***Edit) I have this book, and the part with the type on it is the only dust jacket it has so when you take it off it's just the image. In my old apartment I had it on top of a bookcase, with the cover facing out. Does that count? http://www.amazon.com/Annie-Leibovitz-American-Patti-Smith/dp/0375505075 *** Oh, I like that one! Oddly, I don't much like carnivals but I love the imagery of them. I like that art style too, so that's a winner all around for me. *** That coverpop site is a trip. I just went bug eyed on it for a ridiculously long time. Mesmerizing! ck1, I like the cover on The World Without Us a lot. I don't think I'd seen it before. I've always liked Cold Mountain too. One of my problems is that a lot of the time my favorite books don't have my favorite covers and vice versa, so that complicates the art question considerably. *** Hey, ck1! That may be the only Sometimes A Great Notion cover that I don't have. I suppose I'll have to get one, just on principle. I like it, it suits the book pretty well, I think. That would make eight copies, but they don't all have different covers. :( *** Cover Browser is cool! Those are some great sites you found. Thanks for that, I'm saving them for sure.

I don't have any book-inspired art hanging in either of my rooms--only music and a couple of Botticelli prints. There have been a few pieces that I've kept my eye on, though.
