Good vampire books to read?

I have read the Twilight books, and five of The Vampire Diaries books. I loved The Vampire Diaries but I hated the direction it seemed to be going in so I stopped reading them. I'm a Damon fan, myself. So, with that information, what books would you recommend?

The Black Dagger series is pretty cool. It is a bit more grown-up and changes/updates some of the vampire lore to suite its' story lines.

Twilight sucks and Vampire Diaries is way better as a tv series because you get to actually stare at Damon. I couldn't read two pages of those dreadful books. The only vampire series I enjoyed was the Anita Blake series, although if you're a Twilight fan girl those books might be a little too explicit for you. Edit - I wouldn't worry, it was obvious as you read Twilight. Sorry I couldn't be of use. (vampires are generally explicit creatures. If not then they're not vampires)
