Will Normandy be busy in August?

Which amphibious assault was larger in every way possible the invasion of Normandy or the invasion of Okinawa?

  • I saw this on my tour through the National World War Two Museum: Basically, Okinawa was the biggest naval armada and amphibious invasion in history. But the invasion of Normandy was larger, the initial assault had 12 divisions compared to the 4 divisions on Okinawa. Normandy had the U.S. First Army and the British Second Army, Okinawa only had the U.S. Tenth Army but a division (2nd Marine Division) was a reserve and never used. 6,900 ships and craft on D-day and 1,300 on L-day. How can the National WW2 Museum lie about such things of historical importance?

  • Answer:

Normandy by a long shot was larger. An unprecedented combination of men and material. Around 4 to 5 times the size of the invasion of Okinawa. The World War Two Museum can't have an obvious fact like that wrong, can they really?

Travis, I am certain you didn't mean to be accusatory in your supporting statements for the question you posted but to say the "National WW2 Museum lie...." sort of looks like an unintentional finger pointing by yourself in regards to this topic. I am curious to know what the specific guidelines are that the National WW II Museum have that they are following. I for one always thought that Okinawa was a larger amphibious assault than that of Normandy. But, since most Americans had a geographical reference point to Europe in many more ways than the Pacific Rim the European battles and war in general were much more common for simple manner of thinking and speaking. I believe the National WW II Museum has it right - I am attaching a link to their site that you may already have that you can post an inquiring question for a better understanding. Good question...star coming, Gerry D. Update: It really should come as no surprise that the Battle for Okinawa out did the Normandy Invasion; the top combat units that had more combat days in a row than any other in the whole of WW II were U.S. Army units and Marine Units at the Division level in the PTO.

D-Day was. However. That's not to say that the Armada for it was larger. Remember, all that threatened the invasion force in the Channel were planes and maybe a sub or two. In the Pacific, the entire Imperial Navy was roaming about. Also, both needed preliminary bombardments. On D-Day, this was done by Bombers based in England. But at Okinawa it was done by ships and fighter-bombers launched from Aircraft carriers. So the Pacific Fleet needed a lot more ships to pull something like that off. The Invasion of Normandy could rely on ground assets, as well. I hope this helps. P.S. Maybe it said the largest one in the history of the Marine Corps.? That would be true, I think.
