  • Answer:

He had married his dead brother's wife Catherine of Aragon and she to that point had not provided Henry with a male heir. Henry lost his patience and asked the pope for permission to divorce her so that he could get a new wife and that she would provide him with a son. Since there was no legal (biblical) reason why the pope had to grant the divorce (i.e. Catherine had not been unfaithful etc) the pope refused. This left henry with no hope of continuing his dynasty and no future king of England. Quite a major issue!!! So Henry made his own ruling on the issue and split his church from rome. i.e. he became head of the church in England. Not head of the church of England (that is a protestant denomination which slowly developed out of the events). Therefore Henry simply cut Rome and the papacy out of the deal. It is only subsequent to this that for monetary purposes Henry realised that the pope had no right to the wealth of his realm so he dissolved the monasteries. Later destroying them to build defenses against his Catholic enemies. Subsequent to Henry's actions and the developing anti-catholic feeling on the continent during Elizabeth's reign a full conversion of the nation to protestantism and the church of England occurred.

It was very important to Henry VIII that his wife, Catherine of Aragon, should give birth to a male child. Without a son to take over from him when he died. Henry feared that the Tudor family would lose control of England. Catherine gave birth to six children but five died within a few weeks of being born. Only one child, Mary, survived into adulthood. ----------- ==> Henry VIII needed to have a son to carry on the royal lineage. The referenced website has a further explanation of this necessity, and the actions of Henry VIII to ensure that it came to pass. ------------------------------ I hope this is helpful.

the Vatican was in Rome, and the Vatican was the home of the head of the catholic church, the pope, and since Henry wanted his own religion (church of England) he broke off with the pope and Rome

He wanted to divorce a Catholic and El pope said No and in those days people Believed that a King had the Divine Right to rule and he was angry that a man in an elected position actually said No so he formed the only true catholic church I cannot find anywhere where the Pope Gets his authority and Neither did Henry V111
