What are the most common grips in tennis used by professionals?

  • If you search this question on google, your answers are just individual opinions of people who like certain grips. What I want to know is what grip is most used for Forehands, One and Two Handed Backhands and Second Serve. Obviously I want to know what it most commonly used by professionals, not average players. I already know that Slice, First Serve, Volleys and Overheads are all used with Continental and that Forehands are almost always Semi-Western or Western, but which one is more used? Second Serves are done with Continental and Eastern Backhand, which one is more used? Two Handed Backhands are a tricky one, is the left hand more often Eastern or Semi-Western? Is right hand more often Eastern Backhand, Continental or Eastern Forehand? Eastern Forehand is quite commonly used so don't think I'm stupid, Marat Safin is one that uses it. Is One Handed Backhand more commonly used with a Eastern Backhand or Extreme/Full Eastern Backhand or Semi-Western Backhand?

  • Answer:

All that we can give you for forehands, is that most use some form of a western grip. There's no black and white line dividing a semi- and a full- western. Really, all the players are going to use some degree of a western that could be between the two. For the two handed backhand, ignore the grip from the left hand. If you do that, you are left with a continental right hand grip. One-handed backhand will depend on whether or not the players use topspin or just slice. Continental is the easiest to use, but is very difficult to use for topspin. The eastern grip allows for both types of spin, and is probably more common. If you're good, your second serve will use the same grip as your first serve (continental). This way, the opponent can't see you make a change and know that they can expect a kick or spinning serve.

For Forehand it depends where you learn to play. If you learn how to play on a clay court you have usually use an eastern. Most common in the US is the semi western. On the two hander the top hand or the left hand is semi westerna and the bottom is Continental or Eastern Forehand. One Handed backhand also depends on where you learn to play. I use a Eastern Backhand like Federer.
