Are football plays hard to learn?

My Concerns with me starting Football. Please Help.?

  • This year is my first year playing football. I am 15 years old, a Sophomore in High School playing for JV. I am not someones image of a football player. I am 5' 3" and about 105-110 pounds. So obviously I am not a perfect player, especially for football, but I love the sport and my friends told me to give it a try (they to also play) Earlier on in the year I went to the weight room for a Program that helped students get fit, the coaches who were there to supervise. It is called BFS (Bigger Faster Stronger) and I went to that and actually noticed results, but now that it stopped, I haven't been working out, but I still have some of my results. So the weight room is now open again to help the players get fit for the season. I went today and was nervous because it is me with all these other players who are bigger and know what to do. So we started doing some stuff to get a taste of what practice will be like, we flipped some tires, which I was ok at. Then dragged some weights on a small sled which was hard, because it was working on hips and thighs, and after jogging at home they were sore, but then again it was a hard task. Then we started working on drills. I am thinking of being a Wide Receiver. I have heard good things, and bad...but mostly good. The only thing is, when under pressure and around other people who can make sweet catches...I can't. When at home playing with my brother on some plays I can, but there is no pressure even sometimes at school when we played I was ok. Today I made a couple catches, but not as many that I should have made. I would have the ball..but then it would just go right through my hands. And a certain catch I can't make is when I am running and I have my back to the ball and have to catch it over my head sorta...I just can't do it. I will turn and lose the ball or fall (which happened today, but it wasn't that embarrassing because there where some falls and dives today) And another bad thing is, when they said Flanker Right, 2, 3, 7...I was like wtf does that mean!? I did some of the number plays while doing the drills but it is hard to remember when there are two types of 9's and crap. So I know I haven't even stated my problems yet, I wanted you to get a taste of what is going on. Sorry, but I have also had a history of running and completely shutting down because of cramps. They can just rip me apart and it will be over me for 10 minutes or more which can not happen. They are in my legs, but mostly and more deadlier...in my stomach/side. I NEED to learn how to stop these cramps! Or I will never be able to do good this season. Now I have a football camp I am going to next week and I would love if I knew what to do by then so I don't make a complete fool of myself. Here are my concerns: How can I stop these cramps!? How can I work on making catches? (especially over the head) Based on my size and weight..how will I do with all this equipment on me? How can I prepare? How can I learn these plays so I don't have to stop and ask wtf I am suppose to do? I forget to say last year on JV a girl played (who was a Sr.) and she was like my height and no doubt my weight, so she kind of gave me hope. And I thought of her equiment, which would be mine, and how she got through it. Idk why I am asking you guys, but just saying. So if you were nice enough to read all this, I am already thankful, but if you can answer at least a few of my questions, you would really be saving me a lot of stess, embarrassment and just everything. Idc how, links, videos, or just telling me. At least it helped. Thanks!

I highly recommend that you seek advice and keep in touch with the girl, who played on your high school's junior varsity team last season. This girl seems like the perfect person to guide you through this because she is older than you, and has gone through the experience already. The fact that this girl played on the junior varsity team as a senior in high school tells me that she is a late bloomer in football. She may not have been highly recruited, but I have a feeling that she will play for an elite college football program in 2 years. The school that gets her will have found themselves a nice hidden gem :) Based on your height and weight, I believe that you will make a very good fit at the wide receiver position, and will do just fine with all that equipment on you. My best advice for you this summer is to eat healthy, and exercise by doing a lot of running every day. If you do these two things, you will get into better shape, which will greatly improve your chances of being successful in football this season, as well as reduce your cramping.

First I want to say congrats for not giving up. As for your cramps, the best theing you can do is stretch them out. I know it gurts like hell to even move but by stretching out the area where it hurts looses your muscles, making it feel better. Good news, the more you practice and train the less chances you'll get cramps. Your body is not used to all that training yet, but it will through hard work. If your cramp is really bad rub in so deep cool or tiger balm ( keep in school bag or sports bag) . To prevent cramps stretch thoroughly, you'll less likely get a cramp if your stretch properly before you start training. I AlWAYS mess up in front of my volleyball coaches, even though there really stupid mistakes. For me I'm just soo worried that I will mess up I loose my concentration and end up messing up anyways. Try to keep focused, pretend like its just you and the thrower and keep your concentration on your game play. You seem pretty much average for the teenage guy. I think you'll fit in good :) If you have problem with remebering your gameplay ask your coach if he can give you a copy of some plays so you can memorize them and feel more confident about your gameplay. Just keep on training, practicing and try not to stress CONCENTRATE Really hope this helps, and good luck :)

potassium stops leg cramps (bananas), stomach and side cramps are a lack of hydration (water). the only way you can practice making a catch is by doing it over and over again and again. dealing with pressure is a mental thing, that you have to overcome yourself. the equipment should be no problem, even for your size, the worst part will be the helmet, which will hurt but you're going to have to get over it to play. there are two ways to learn a play, one is to find the style of offense and study it endlessly. the other is to practice it over and over and over. since you're new, you should let your coaches know and they should help you learn the plays and know your routes. communicating with your coaches is extremely important. it can help you through a lot of trouble. usually certain groups of the team only need to know specific parts of the play names because they'll let you know where you're going or what direction you're running in.

For cramps I whole stretch alot ( stretch where ur getin most of your cramps) and to help with the fb gear I would practice running down field with it on a couple of times a week. For catches if u don't turn ur head around and look where the ball is well do that hope this helped

For the catching, you should use tennis balls thrown to you at different directions and catch with one hand and for reflexes you should turn around and have someone throw the ball to you, you turn around and try to catch the ball already in motion.
