Now that Randy Johnson is retired, who will be the last 1980s baseball player?
-
Johnson was one of seven players active in 2009 who made his major league debut in the 1980s. 1986 -- Jamie Moyer. 1988 -- Tom Gordon, Johnson, Gary Sheffield, John Smoltz. 1989 -- Ken Griffey Jr., Omar Vizquel. Entering 2010, Moyer (Phillies), Griffey (Mariners), and Vizquel (White Sox) are signed, and Gordon, Sheffield, and Smoltz are free agents. I expect Gordon is retired. He barely pitched last season, and got released in August. Sheff and Smoltz want to play, but haven't yet found a willing team. Who among them will be the last player active? (Johnson retiring means we've also lost another former Expo, but there's still about 30 of them running around.)

Answer:
Omar Vizquel. The guy won a gold glove playing SS at the age of 39 ( 2006 ) which is incredible. He's a great guy to have in the club house and has a lot to offer young infielders.

Definitely Vizquel. He always stays in top shape and plays shortstop with such ease. He makes a really good backup player now. He even said if he couldnt make it back to the MLB, he would play in another country or minor leagues just so he could play baseball again.

im going to say Vizquel, it looks like this is going to be Griffey last year, Gordon can never stay healthy, Sheffield is slowly decreasing in value, Jamie Moyer is 47, and Smoltz is not the same pitcher he use to be

Vizquel. Even if he's not playing on a day to day basis, he can fill in for injured players and mentor youngsters like he did the past season with the Rangers.
Rangers♥ Young has the record :)
omar vizquel

I'd say John Smoltz, but have no reason other than he was pretty good with the Cardinals last year, if I remember correctly. I'm very sad about the quickly depleting field of former Expos, especially since the '05 Nationals team was the one I was first introduced to baseball with (became a fan in early '05 at age of 14, bought MVP Baseball 2005, always played Nats and had the same players- now they're almost all gone! Jose Vidro, Brad Wilkerson out of the game forever! Everybody else a journeyman who can't stay with anybody! It's so sad!)

I'm gonna go with Omar Vizquel. He can still play shortstop and make it look easy.

My guess is Rudy Seanez. I was shocked to learn that he is still kicking around baseball in this century.
