I'm writing a paper on violence education and need some references on how martial arts is taught
-
Answer:
martial arts are taught through enabiling the practitioner to expirience the inner depth of the art . some arts and instructors emphisise this from the start though the best instructers i have had only make veigh reference to this. it is an expirience you would have to try for your self. any martial art will help you expirience it though you have to be willing to accept what you feel but also question it with the same effort. most work on repetition some work on repetition of sequences others on single movements. the whole point in martial arts is to prepair the mind and body for a violent confrontation wheather the threat be physical or mental. they teach you to use youre mind and body freely without hesitation or thought. the end result should be that thear is no need for violence of any kind. as you have through a certain amount of soul searching found the real you and have no need or fear of it. also violence is inate and letting go of this violence every time you train lets this part of your phsiche rest for the rest of the time . it gives it a proper place to exsist. most martial artists that have any exspirience are the most peaceful people i know if you want to wright about violence education you should try terrorism or race hate football holaganism. martial arts are onlyviolent before the skils are masterd but to answer your question martial arts are realised not taught.

I think the fundamental principle is repetition, it trains the mind and body to react instinctively.

i went to barnes and nobles recently, and they have a seperate section for martial arts. all the books i browsed through in that section included a philosophy section. one i especially remember is a book about ninjitsu that had an introduction which included all the martial arts, including haku (a nearly dead form practiced by polynesians.) In general, they all stress 2 main ideas: 1. martial arts are for self-defense only. 2. the main purpose of martial arts is the harmony of mind through the movements of the body. meditation is a key component of all martials I have seen. There is a good site too (see below) that lists all martial arts with links to references.

The key to martial arts is focusing energy. Anger is energy but it is chaotic in nature. The arts teach you to channel anger by being calm and redirecting your focus. Then you will be stronger.
