How do you calculate lattice energy?

How do you calculate the lattice energy of CaO?

  • Use the Born-Haber cycle to calculate the lattice energy of CaO. You may need the following data: electron affinity of oxygen EA 1 = -141 kJ/mol, EA 2 = 744 kJ/mol; ionization energy of calcium IE 1 = 590 kJ/mol}, IE 2 = 1145 kJ/mol. Please help! I'm not sure which ionization energy to use or which electron affinity value either. I'm just lost. Thanks!

  • Answer:

You need to use a Born Haber diagram . In it you'll need to use both 1st and 2nd IE for Ca to get Ca2+, then to form O2_ needs both 1st and 2nd EA If you follow my link below it will take you to the full diagram of what to do, although the data values used in this are slightly different to your given values .. just substitute them instead. http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l117/cian584/BornHaberCaO.jpg
