What is chronic sinusitis?

Where can I find authoritative proof that chronic sinusitis can cause sleep apnea?

  • I have chronic sinusitis caused by a deviated septum resulting from damaged to my head and face sustained in an Army helicopter crash. Shortly after the crash, I developed the sinus infection and while I had most, if not all, of the symptoms associated with sleep apnea, it was not diagnosed until much later. I have had one operation on my nose which did not solve the problem and I ABSOLUTELY will not have another. The Veterans Administration has denied service connection for my sleep apnea and I need some authoritative source to support the assertions found on dozens of ENT and Apnea sites, which cite chronic sinusitis as a cause ( one several possibilities) for sleep apnea. Thanks, Wavie

  • Answer:

Sorry, but you already found that assertions on dozens of ENT and Apnea sites,as you affirmed, so, why are you stil asking for that?? Besides I think that the most part of web pages can't be as authoritative as a clinic (signed) certificate.

I think that you already have the web sites. Having always suffered from chronic sinusitis, also with a deviated septum and also having undergone surgery that didn't help, I understand. My ex had sleep apnea, which is caused by a throat obstruction that closes down your air supply when you're trying to sleep. I did not have this problem, but it was a separate operation on the throat, not on the nose. I am answering this to share a solution that I have found to my chronic sinusitis. You can also research this on the web, but we are chronically low in iodine - salt supplements just don't do enough. You can't find real iodine supplements in most health food stores because it's used in the manufacture of some illegal drugs. But you can get it, as potassium iodine supplements for nuclear emergencies. It's recommended, but not widely advertised, that we should all take a fairly high dosage of iodine in case of a nuclear attack or accident (like Chernobyl). There are several places you can get them online. I break them up into 4 to 6 pieces, to get the equivalent dose that people in other areas of the world get normally in their diet. It has helped enormously with my chronic sinusitis, while the operation and steroid sprays that they gave me did nothing. This won't help you get an operation for sleep apnea from the VA, but that should be dealt with separately based on your medical evaluation. Hope this helps.

Hello, Having past experience with the VA do not think that any general references will do you any good. I served as a Maintenance Officer in ICORP area of Vietnam. I had to get around country the best I could at time. On a trip to a unit North of Hue I hitched a ride on a Air America Cargo cargo plane a C45 which crash landed in the jungle after taking a small arms fire. This was never really officially reported to the DOD (DIDN'T EVEN TELL MY WIFE), as it was not an official military flight! But I was wounded slightly, my clerk and I though were just happy to be alive, and walked back to a firebase. We went on with our lives. After coming back to the States, I had what was diagnosed as a "Convulsive Disorder" brought about severe head trauma. The only time I had ever been knocked unconscious was in the plane! THIS NEVER OFFICIALLY HAPPENED! THE CIA DOES NOT RUN AIR AMERICA! HA HA HA ! SO MUCH FOR MY ADVENTURES WITH THE V.A. You will need a statement from a Medical Doctor saying that in this specific case your chronic sinusitis is causing your sleep apnea, period! THERE IS NOTHING LESS THAN THAT WILL HELP YOU! I ASSURE YOU GENERAL REFERENCES WIII NOT DO OTHER THAN THE PERSONAL PHONE NUMBERS OF YOUR CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION!!! MAKE THEM EARN THEIR MONEY. I use nightly one of those CPAP devices, It really did give me back about 20+ years of my life, no kidding. You should go to one of those sleep labs and subject yourself to the couple of nights of testing that are really required to fine tune. I swear I fought it with every thing I could possibly bring forth ,then last year after emergency hospitalization the nurses advised my wife that I stopped breathing X number of times while I sedated ... "did he have sleep apnea?" Needless to say this hard headed 60 year old I can make it on my own had to seek help !!! OR GET A NEW WIFE I DECIDED THAT THE CLINIC WOULD BE COVERED BY INSURANCE, LAWYERS COST TO MUCH !!!! (JOKE) I went to the Clinc, which was no bed of roses, but acceptable. BUT the resulting CPAP once I got use to it is absolute WONDERFUL! I honestly feel much younger. The damn thing works, I was kinda wishing that it didn't. BUT I SWEAR THAT IT DOES AND IF YOU THINK THA YOU HAVE SLEEP APNEA SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP. I SWEAR YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT! WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY! A SAVED HARD HEADED SONOFABITCH
