Computer engineering or electrical engineering?

Electrical Engineering VS Computer Engineering?

  • I'm currently studying Electrical Engineering and I am in my second semester. When applying to University, the main reason I chose Electrical was because of lack of anything else... Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Mining, etc did not seem like fields that I wanted to pursue. Now, however, I'm contemplating switching into Computer Engineering. Although the switch isn't that great seeing as both programs are under the same department, its still changes the general field that I'm studying. So, my question to you guys would be if that seems like a good choice? The reason I'm contemplating switching is because, at home, I'm interested in building/upgrading/overclocking my computer. I've also always been curious about how something as complicated as a computer works. The thing is, I'm not sure whether these are strong enough reasons to switch. I hear that Electrical Engineering has many more opportunities because its a much broader subject (although both programs have significant overlap). So what do you think? Is it worth switching into? Am I loosing big opportunities if I do? Another option would be to get a bachelors in electrical and then a masters in computer. Or just specialize in computer engineering in the electrical program (by taking classes that focus on computers in my later years). Right now a lot of classes overlap between both programs, so it would be easy to switch. Soon though, the programs will branch. That is why its important for me to make a decision asap.

Seriously, kids these days worry too much. Your major will NOT affect where you go with a career. Whether you have an electrical engineering degree or Computer Engineering, what matters the most is that first job you get. Your degree trains you to be organized and learn the basics. That will get your foot in the door. Be picky where your foot goes because you will be labeled as that sort of engineer forever. Experience is MUCH more important than your degree. Just get good grades, obtain the degree, no matter what engineering field really, and get your foot in the door. If you want to go to let's say..... Dell.....who cares which degree you have. Go there for an internship, get your foot in the door, NETWORK.... meet people there, find out who knows people who work there and talk to them. When you land a first job, you will have to be trained. College doesn't train you for the actual job functions, college teaches you the bare basic work.....taking notes, writing reports, using your brain. NOBODY has come out of college and jumped right into a job and knew what to do. You'll have to be trained on EVERYTHING. Looking back, my degree was only a technicality. I learned 90% of what I do AFTER college. So don't worry. You're good. Either degree will get you into a good company. It will be completely up to you after college which direction to go. Having one degree or another won't hinder you. Just tell them you're willing to learn and you're eager. Boom, you're in.
