What are the chances of California seceding from the U.S?

What are chances of finding electrical engineering( VLSI, RF) job in California when you live in washington DC?

  • I just graduated in Electrical Engineering major and live in washignton DC. I am sending my resumes to California companies with a California address ( using my friend's address) but not even a single phone call so far. If I move to California for some time to find a job there, do you think I have a better chance of getting a job there?

  • Answer:

No. We are in a recession, remember? That's why you aren't receiving job offers, not because you don't live in California. There's a lot of people in line ahead of you, and a fresh college student who they have to train is the last thing they want right now.

RF is a keyword for DoD contractors. Have you applied to any with offices closer to home, like Northrop Grumman's huge location in Baltimore? Many have offices in DC and the East coast. Lockheed Martin has a microwave fab location in MA, for instance. Also try Denver, which is becoming more of a tech hotbed. Again using the example of DoD contractors, Ball Aerospace and Lockheed both have offices there, among many others. While RF is a keyword, it's also pretty competitive, and I'm sure you're aware of VLSI prospects. There aren't a ton of jobs out there for entry-level RF engineers period, although I'm not sure about RF VLSI in particular. Do you have any contacts at companies involved with this type of work?

Duhh - have you not read "What Color Is Your Parachute"??? This is a rhetorical question - you obviously have not. Read it, then do follow up calls, suitably timed, to the places where you have sent your resume. Were you expecting them to call you back all by themselves? Seriously?

It is very difficult to land a job just sending resumes cold to the personnel department of any major company, as your resume is going to be one out of several hundred (or one in several thousand). The guy in charge of hiring will probably never see it. Maybe you should go to the library and read some books on how to conduct a successful job search (when you obviously have no experience).

VLSI is a very broad subject. It could mean fabrication of integrated circuits, or it could mean large scale digital system design at a physical level as far as timing and power dissipation, or it could be generalized digital system design for functionality, or it could be mixed signal circuit design, or it could mean large scale analog integrated circuit design for power distribution or communication systems. To say "VLSI" is very generic, especially since most electrical or computer engineers will have at least one class that qualifies as VLSI so unless you specify one specific thing it doesn't make you more competitive. It takes quite a lot of resumes to get a job offer. You should probably also look more locally for an internship sponsored through your college (yes, you can still do an internship after graduation) because if you have no experience then your job prospects remain slim. Generally places that are hiring look at trusted sources of possible recruits before they look at everyone else.

You might want to apply for US Navy civil service positions. There are positions in San Diego, Washington, Virginia, and other locations. Check out Department of Navy human resources, https://chart.donhr.navy.mil/
