What is and electrical and electronic engineering technician?

Canada: Electrical Engineering technician, am i screwed?

  • Ok so basically, i have always been interested in electronics, all kinds of electrical technology, so i knew thats what i wanted to do and i am now taking a electrical engineering 2 year.. introduction course? the thing is, im not the greatest at math, or atleast didnt try to be good at it, now with school in 3 weeks, im getting worried that im going to flunk all this math and fail. so i was just wondering from people with experience in this field, is going into this course just a failure? or am i going to be able to learn the math that i will be receiving, or will i be to late and not be able to keep up

  • Answer:

In practice, the key to effective Electrical Engineering is intuition based on understanding the essential nature of specific engineering problems. That intuition is gained by in-depth understanding of physics and mechanics. That understanding is developed by using mathematics, at least through differential equations. If you had a mathematics tutor, a really knowledgeable person who could study your difficulties, find your weaknesses and point you towards overcoming them, you can learn mathematics well enough. If not, your future studies will be crippled because you seem to not have mastered the prerequisites for taking them. If you can't master those prerequisites, if not with the help of a tutor perhaps by intensive personal review of everything mathematical in which you feel doubt, you should consider concentrating on electronics technology, not engineering. .

20 years ago it would have been an issue nowadays everything is done by software's, engineering is now just plugging numbers in boxes most engineers don't even have a clue of what is going-on there are some engineering that is still done the old fashion way, but not in electronics even in electrical work, all the vendors have their parts in CAD and it fully integrates with softwares like AutoCAD... it keeps track of last used numbers, makes bill of materials all automatic. it is absolutely fantastic when compared with manual A

You will need a lot of math in your coursework. On the job, you will probably not need as much depending on the type of work you do. Anyway the parts of math that you need on the job will become familiar to you and things will work out if you can get over the hump of the math in your courses. The other thing that may happen is that when you see practical application of the math you may understand the math part better.

Stop worrying the introductory courses are there to lead you into the full course. I was bad at maths at school but learnt all I needed to at college so do not give-up just yet because you can always get extra help on the maths if necessary. Also, if the worse comes to the worse you could transfer to a domestic electricians course.

To some of the posters above, the OP is asking about EE technician training not engineering, there is a world of difference required wrt the math required in these 2 fields (and yes I am well aware there is overlap and they are strongly related). I have completed both engineering and technician schooling and to be honest if you are not good at math and as you stated you do not have the interest in learning it as your post leads me to believe, I would not pursue electronics/electrical. If you are ambitious, you wish to learn math, and you put a lot of time and effort into catching yourself up you should be fine and I would suggest to continue. It will take a lot of work to continue down this path but since you are just at the introductory level this is the time to decide. If you choose to continue - possible obtain a tutor, obtain some additional books for practise work, do math for fun, do a lot of math.
