well there are many types if stress such as compressive, tensile, bending and shear tensile and compressive are simply P/A where P is the tensile or compressive force and A is th cross sectional area of the member. bending stress alone is M/S where M is the bending moment and S is the section property of the cross section call section modulus shear stress is V/A where V is the shearing force and A is the cross sectional area of the section which can resist the shear force. Many times compression and/or tension is combined with bending stress then we get P/A + M/S
