Aerospace Engineering or Computer Science?
-
Hey everyone! So for the past few years I've been in a constant debate between majoring in aerospace engineering and majoring in computer science. I'm a freshman at Virginia Tech and it's come to the point where I'll need to select which branch I want to go into. I thought that the decision would become easier through the years but in fact it's only become harder. My dream has been to work for NASA and to contribute to space exploration since I was around 8-years-old so aerospace seemed like the obvious choice; however, I have been programming since I was 12 and find it very fun to do. I feel like both are my perfect career field, and ideally I would love to major in both, but I am not sure how practical that is and thus I pose this question in hopes of getting some much appreciated opinions. At the least I plan on minoring in computer science. (I don't believe I can minor in aerospace.) I'm also minoring in astronomy and possibly in math as well. So to sum my question up: Considering I love both fields, which should I choose? Would a double-major in both be practical? Would a minor in computer science instead be just as beneficial in regards to employment? And any other advice would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you!

Answer:
A major in aerospace with a minor (or just some extra classes) in computer science is WITHOUT A DOUBT practical. One of the big problems in the aerospace industry currently is getting/attracting/keeping good software engineers. Who do you think writes all the flight software that makes the spacecrafts actually WORK? The s/w engineers that do get hired often have issues understanding (or perhaps caring about) the code they're writing - you wouldn't have that problem. Since you love both fields, that would seems like a very obvious fit for you (with the added bonus that when they FIND great engineers who can code and also know about aerospace, those people tend to be well compensated).

Major in aerospace and take all technical electives in computer science. Be sure and take a class in artificial intelligence and get as much control theory as you can. The end result is that you will be able to write the software that controls all modern air and space craft, surely the best of both worlds? I was interested in Robotics, so majored in EE and took electives in ME and CS. It worked out well for me, I now design complex electro/hydraulic/mechanical control systems and even write the software that runs the hardware.

if you have the energy for few more classes then Do both, you will never regret it, especially if you like both majors. thats from my own experience. because once you graduate with one major and decide to go back for the other one it will cost at least a 2 year full time.

Go for a double major. I am doing a double major in Aerospace Engineering/Computer Science (with a minor in flight testing, flight simulation and aircrash investigation) You'd love it..... I also wanna work for NASA!
