What are some British terms of endearment?

What terms of endearment might a Hindu use when referring to a beloved daughter. English or Hindi?

  • This question is for a story I am writing. The parents live in India (Delhi) the daughter lives in LA. The language that the daughter knows is English. She grew up in LA. The parents moved back to India when she became an adult and began teaching after getting her first PHd. The daughter was attacked 3 days before her parentrs come back to LA for a visit and her father will react to that. I want his reaction to have an authentic feel and sound. I would be interested in both terms of endearment toward the daughter and terms of anger toward her attacker.

  • Answer:

Beti बेटी Meri Bachchi मेरी बच्ची Munni मुन्नी Lalli लल्ली (If the parents belong to Uttar Pradesh) Kudi कुडी (If the parents are from Punjab) ....or they could also use her pet name. The words above may be used with slight modifications also, like: Bitiya बिटिया Muniya मुनिया ...and so on. EDIT: Dear Alice, Thanks for the edit. Please wait for some more time to modify my answer as I am busy these days in taking care of my mother who is hospitalised. EDIT: Since the father had been in the USA (LA), his reaction would obviously be a little bit anglicised, as I think. So he might use more of English swear words to vent his anger on the attacker. However, he can be frustrated enough to use Hindi swear words as his wife shall tell him words against leaving a girl alone in a 'bad' country of hooligans and criminals (it does NOT mean USA is like that though). The father might use the following words to vent his anger, even though some might find them uncivilised enough not to be used here on a social forum: K U T T E कुत्ते K A M I N E कमीने Kaat ke rakh dunga काट के रख दूँगा Maar dalunga मार डालूंगा ....... and so on. Like the father may speak the follwing: 'Meri bachchi, tu pareshan mat ho. Main us k a m i n e ko maar dalunga.' *Good Luck for the success of your story/book* Hope that helps. BTW, why do you write Ph.D or simply PhD as PHd?
