How can your vocabulary expand through Study Abroad?

How do I expand my vocabulary? ?

  • I have a knack for remembering/utilizing new vocabulary, but I'm not that exposed to new words that often, what are some good ways to expand the vocabulary? I've tried reading dictionaries but I found that a little boring, and a lot of words I already knew.

  • Answer:

I am only thirteen years of age and even so, my teachers, parents, friends and even other adults are amazed at my vocabulary and say it is extremely advanced. Although i do have a life, I read almost every single day. Instead of reading books that are intended for 13 year olds, in the library I would go to the Older Teen section and borrow a few books from there once or twice a week. I also tried reading the dictionary but it is time-consuming and not all that rewarding and reading all the words you already know just makes the experience less memorative so it doesn't really help anyway. I find reading more mature books intended for adults and older teenagers really helps and after each book my close friends can tell the difference. If I stumble across a word, I would search it on online dictionaries and also in my own dictionaries to find out the meaning, make it familiar to myself, and then learn how to use it correctly in a sentence. Then I would look it up in a thesaurus and find word families as well.

Just try subscribing to "word of the day" things. I think there's one on dictionary.com. Read harder books, too. They're full of fun words, and then you can go look them up while reading good literature at the same time!

Etymology. Research the history of words and learn to relate them to each other. Derive words intelligently based on their roots. Find out whether words are synonyms or antonyms of each other.

Go to your local bookstore. I once got this book called, "10,000 Words You Probably Didn't Know" it is very good for learning new vocabulary =)
