Alot of people in France do speak english. So I don't think you will have any problems there. Paris is a main city, and they can speak english. http://www.france.com/

I recommend the book French or Foe by Polly Platt; while it highlights American/French cultural differences, you may be familiar enough with US culture that it could help you. At the very least, learn to say: Excuse me for disturbing you sir (ma'am), but I have a problem and most people will be happy to help.

Most people in France know at least some english, although they may not be very inclined to use it. Most young people take english in school at some point, so it is part of their education. You will probably find that you can communicate with people in Paris in english, but some may be reluctant or rude when doing so. If I were you, I would at least make an effort to learn some basic french before you go in order to read the signs in the metro and the shops. You will do much better if you attempt to communicate in French before you use your english. There are many phrase books out there for just such a task. Bonne chance! (Good luck!)

I moved to Paris when I was 17 years old, and didn't speak a WORD of French! I was truly shocked at how polite and helpful French people were, and actually learned French quickly. French students are required to take 7 years of English classes to graduate, so although you might run into people that are shy, or insecure about their English, EVERYONE speaks at least basic English. good luck, and have fun!

I don't know much about Indian culture myself, but yes they do speak English quite a bit and my understanding is that if you don't speak French very well, they prefer that you don't even try. And Paris is a world by itself. There is France and then there is Paris. They have their own way of speaking, doing, thinking, etc. But it is a fun, educational, cultural, exciting place to be. You should have a great time. And all this coming from an American..imagine that. :)

I am not French. I do not know, but take in mind the following. I have travelled over 12-15 times with Air France from Greece to Uk and the opposite, in the past, and in the french Airport (Charles de Gaul), JUST A FEW people spoke English.... Unless they pretended themselves they don't know English for reasons (of course) I don't know.

in paris, everyone speaks english. if you go out into the country, perhaps you might run into some difficulty, but for the most part, everyone understands and can speak some semblance of english. in fact, unless you're near-native in french, most french people get annoyed at your use of french and start speaking in english to you anyway. good luck~

Well, you should learn some french before going there. Some people do speak a very poor english, but not everywhere, and they sometimes have an accent which makes it impossible to understand. Moreover, they don't like to speak english, even when they can. You do get by in touristic places like monuments, museums, cafés in the city centre, but not at all if you're away from the touristic circuits. About the culture: the thing is I don't know much about indian culture... But french culture is a typical european culture. The good thing is: Paris is full of people from all over the World! Anyway, just have fun! And a good trip.
