Is "potent" a good word to describe a leader?

Korean language help!!! Is "Hyoung-nim" a word used to describe a gang leader and an older sister?

  • It is tres-confusing!!

  • Answer:

형님(hyung nim) hyung is what you call an older male like older brother when you are a boy/man. nim is Korean's highest honorific. It is applied to someone important or to someone of great status like god, CEO and so on. Of course, you can apply this to hyung as well if you believe that person is extremely important to you and/or yo respect him. But hyung-nim is particularly common among gang boss or between males that know each other very well.

형 means big brother (used by male) 남 is a honorific syllable. in Korean culture, you can't just simple call someone by name if that person's older than you. So you have to call them by brother, sister, uncle, etc. In the case of man to man relationship, the word used to address is ""hyong". Some people would add the "nim" part to address a person they really respect. In the case of the "hyongnim" used by gang member, it's the same hongnim - coz within the gang they are more likely to have a closs relationship. But older sister (used by man) is not "hyongnim", it's 누나 (nuna) or in honorofic form 누님 (nunim). while female would call older male 오빠 (oppa) and older female 언니 (eonni) -- there's no honorific form for both.
