Answer:
I read a dicitionary once, I learned a couple words, but most I already had heard somewhere before. Of course, there is probably a dictionary of slang words, which I probably have little knowlegde of. As slang words change from place to place. And slang, no matter where it's at is always considered English, at least to me.

No one knows all the words. As evidence, Shakespeare vocabulary was like 350,000 words that maybe he didn't write all the works we know of him. (It was a custom not to write down plays in his time, someone else put them to paper). There are two vocabularies. Those that you remember and use all the time, about 100,000 words I think, and a larger group of words you recognize but never use about 125,000. I can't swear by the numbers they may be too large. Last I heard the English language has 400,000 words to it, and for phrases the Oxford English Dictionary people just announced they've reached 1 million.

To improve your vocabulary, read as many books as you can, always keeping a dictionary beside you for words you do not know. Buy a thesaurus - this is a book that gives you many alternatives for particular words. In this way you will expand your vocabulary. Most native speakers use only a small number of words in daily conversation. The people who use an expanded vocabulary are often people for whom English is a second language. Good luck - you seem to be doing quite well already.

As I am learning French, I thought I would see how good my (native) English is. Flip through a dictionary and pick the word at the bottom of a page, say 40 times. Count your score: a word you use, a word you know but don't use, a word you don't know. eg You might get 20-15-5. Do the same in a similiar size dictionary in your native language and compare the scores. This gives you a measure of how you are getting on with a foreign vocabulary.

I don't think anybody could know all the words a language has. The language includes a lot of terms and jargonisms, obsolete words, neologisms and so on, and I think it's impossible for one person to know every English word

English has over 600.000 thousand words and no one uses all of them. If you want to improve your language skills, you have to read a lot, esp. contemporary literature

Get a microphone and find someone to talk to on the Internet. English has many more words than anyone can ever learn. I have taught English as a second language and Spanish as well. The average high school graduate can recognize and use between 15,000 and 25,000 words. A four-year college graduate may be able to use up to 40,000 words. Someone with a very technical degree might be able to use 45,000 to 55,000 words. And that's about the limit for any average individual in any walk of life in the U.S. Talking with friends on the Internet will help you learn the language. But you'll have to get a good bilingual dictionary and use it. You'll also have to be unafraid to make mistakes when talking with people in English. Fear is the only thing that will keep you from learning any language well.

No, native speakers do not know anywhere close to all the words in a dictionary. Although English is considered to be the language with the most words, no one person knows all of them. People naturally learn new words during their everyday life and experience. If you are not around a lot of English speakers, but you want to learn new words, I would recommend reading.

Heck no. I learned a lot of words from classes, work, reading and crossword puzzles. I have a friend who made it a practice of looking at the dictionary every day and learning a new word every day. I wish I could write as clearing in a second language as you do. Since you have an interest in broadening your vocabulary, I have no doubt that you'll progress. I think you're doing very well right now. I think watching TV/movies and listening to the radio help, too, with speaking. See if there are any English courses offerred through the public school system or community college.

I read somewhere that the average vocabulary of an English speaking American is not as many words as you may think. The thing is that most people use the same ones over and over and after a cetrain age rarely accquire news ones. You may say that reading would enrich a person's vocabulary and yes to an extent. But, again people tend to read the same books on the same level as they have been all their life. A large vocabulary would indicate an educated person, no doubt. But, while they be a cut above the common man in the number of words they know and use with the number of existing word out there to add it seems to be even the educated fall short of anywhere near all the words.
