How to say I love you in Hindi?

How to say "I love you" in Hindi -- parent to child (especially mother to son)?

  • In English:" I love you" is said any age to any gender, but the intonation of the voice (written/spoken) is what determines who is sharing the love! In Hindi, If a mother says "Mai tumse pyaar karti hun" to her child, is this the correct way to say it? Or is this an endearment between lovers? What is the best way to express love to a son from a mother? Are there other endearments between Mother and son that are appropriate to say? e.g.: 1) My handsome boy with the beautiful smile! 2) I am so proud of you and all you do. 3) You have such a big heart to care for your Maa like you do! 4) You can tell me anything, I will listen and not judge. I will guide you if you ask. 5) I hug you and kiss you with all my love! I miss you! 6) A Mom knows when her boy is hurting inside. 7) I will do anything for you, you know this! 8) The world has never seen such a handsome, wonderful son as you! 9) You make me happy to call you my son. 10) Thank you for being such a special son. 11) I am glad you are in my life. My life is so much better because I have you for my son! 12) You are so thoughtful and kind. I am very lucky you are my boy! 13) I trust you to make the right decisions. 14) Did I tell you today how much I love you and how proud I am of you? 15) The woman who loves my son the way he deserves is someone I love. 16) Eat well, Sleep Well, Keep Fit, so all the girls will want you for their own! 17) The world is a better place because my son is in it! 18) My son, you are the sun and the moon and the stars in the sky. 19) If a mother has done her job well, she can let her son go to become the man he was meant to be. 20) "How selfhood begins with a walking away, and love is proved in the letting go." Thank you so much, Dhanyavaad!

  • Answer:

Instead of 'main tumse pyaar karti hoon' say 'main tujhe pyaar karti hoon' since 'tu' is very informal and something like an adult would say to a child, whereas 'tum' is somewhat formal, like lovers would say. There are many mother-son endearments in Hindi, a popular one is to call the boy "mera chaand-ka-toukara" (my piece-of-the-moon). Other popular phrases: Mere akhon ka taara - the star of my eyes (like the apple of my eye) Munna/Nanda/Shona/Sonu (just words of endearment) Mera pyaara beta (my lovely child) Tu meri shaan hai/mera maan hai tu (you're my pride) Naam roshan karega (you will bring honour to this family) A popular Indian lullaby for boys is "Chanda Hai Tu, Mera Suraj Hai Tu" which has become a bit of a common phrase (you are my moon, you are my sun). In Indian families, the mother is by far the most important member (followed by the grandmother, then father) so if you ever watch an Indian movie, you'll hear a tonne of dialogue about the importance of mothers/the mother-child bond.
