Why did so many languages develop in Europe?

Are there any other languages in Europe that have the same counting system as Basque?

  • Like "hogei" (twenty) in Basque literally means "one twenty", and then to say thirty you say "hogeita hamar"; literally "one twenty and ten". Forty is "two twenty", and fifty is "two twenty and ten", and so on. How many other languages are like this? I know for one there's Nahuatl, however that's in Central and South America. Any other languages in Europe with this same style of enumerating?

  • Answer:

The system of counting by adding numbers can also be found in French. ninety = quatre-vingt-dix Basque is an absolutely unique language, as it can't be assigned to any of the existing language families. One of the many theories about its origins is that it is a language from pre-Indo-European times. BTW, not all European languages are members of the Indo-European language family. Some languages, like Hungarian, Estonian and Finnish are members of the Finno-Ugric family.

The Basque language is unique in that it is not of Indo-European origin, and all other European languages are. It is one of theose great mysteries linguists have been trying to figure out....

Danish has a similar system too... For example "tres" (short for tres-sinds-tyve, 60) means three times 20. "Halvtreds" (short for halvtredje-sinds-tyve, 50) means 2.5 times 20. In French it's partially true, Belgium and Swiss don't use "soixante-dix" and "quatre-vingt-dix"... they use "septante" and "nonante" there.

French -from France- has some similar ones: soixante-dix (sixty-ten) = seventy quatre-vingt (four-twenty) = eighty quatre-vingt-dix (four-twenty-ten) = ninety .
