What do French people think of other French speaking countries?

Why do people think that everyone in America needs to speak English?

  • I'm tired of seeing people asking questions like "Do u think that every1 in america shuld learn english?" First off, do me a favor? Why don't you learn how to type English properly before you criticize other people's choice to use their native language. Now, i understand why this is something that should be enforced in the workforce, because obviously how crazy would a workroom full of people speaking different languages be? But other than that, why should you even care about the person sitting next to you on the bus speaking in spanish? or in chinese, or any other language? When the american revolution happened, there were plenty of other people from different ethnicities that helped us win our freedom. So what right do we have to tell them to shut off their native language due to the fact that they are in a foreign country? In fact, America doesn't even HAVE a national language like other countries do. Do you want to know why? Because america isn't solely comprised of english-speaking people. What are you're opinions?

    of course i agree with you in the workforce we are forced to speak english. and i also hate it when me and some of my close friends are speaking spanish and some person comes up to tell us that we need to speak english. i tell them that i am talking about my personal life and to stop being nosy. is none of their business. but most people are nosy and that's why they get angry. they should mind their own f*cking business so yeah people should learn english but they have the right to speak whatever language they feel like in their personal lives. We have freedom of speech.

America is a non-homogenous society. We are not united by a common race, country of origin or location. We are only united by a common belief in freedom and need to build up the things we have in common. One of these ways is with a common language. A common language unites a people. Show me one country that doesn't have a common language and is united, and I will show you one that won't be united for very long. What kind of fool would go to France or Japan and insist on them speaking another language just to be accomodating? Why should we be any different? Like it or not, it's what at least 90% of us speak and if you want to succeed outside of the welfare system, you need to learn it. pS To the thumbs down crowd, sorry if it's too intellectual / truthful for you.

I could care less what people speak in their personal lives. But as far as the 'workforce', I think being bilingual is a very good thing, nowadays. But the whole attitude from liberals about Americans needing to be more lingual goes both ways, and prospective new citizens (immigrants) should be more willing to go first than natural born citizens. It's courtesy. And it's NOT just white Americans who speak English here.

i mean i dont mind you speaking in a diff language. but i think you need to know enough to get around. I mean the signs are in english. please comon . hmm but english is mainly taught in school o.o

Because I wouldn't understand them. They should have respect for us by coming to this country knowing our language, not us knowing theirs to make them feel at home.

And just when I was thinking I'd heard it all... ... Wolfie comes and tells us the it would be "incredibly rude" not to speak the language of the founding fathers. Dear, I know you were not around back then. But that's no excuse for not knowing that the founding fathers themselves were more than just "incredibly rude" to the locals. Because there were people living on the land already, and they had their own language, in case you didn't know. Sheeeeesh! The Muse

I personally don't think that. But if I went to say... Finland for example I would do my best to learn the finnish. That is just me, I would never impose that on anyone else.
