Stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?
-
I was at a meeting today and someone made a joke stating that "he was not a lawyer nor did he stay at a Holiday Inn last night". I have to admit, I laughed because I though they way he said it was funny ... but I was completely "lost in translation". Everyone around me laughed, apparently getting the joke, so I was puzzled and had to look it up on the internet. I realized that the phrase "I'm not a lawyer, nor have I ever played one on TV, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night" is a very common. Can someone tell me where it comes from? Was it a commercial?

Answer:
It is basically the Holiday Inn Chain's TV advertising campaign for the last...oh?....1 or 2 years. The TV commercials show "ordinary" people solving extraordinary problems or performing extraordinary SPECIFIC tasks that someone would not normally be able to do unless one is part of that profession. Such as: Performing brain surgury Taming Lions Providing Physical Therapy to an injured football player Leading a tour in the jungle and crossing a precarious bridge. ********* ********* The point of the campaign is to show that: People who STAY at Holiday Inn Hotels MUST be extremely Intelligent & Capable. The quality & affordability of Holiday can't be beat, so, by staying there as a guest, you are demonstrating unsurpassed intelligence & wisdom...... because: Holiday Inn's quality & affordability package is far superior to any other hotel chain. ************************ ************************ So, in the commericial, the prisoner on death row is seen in the courthouse with a man or women in a nice business suit. The person in the business suit talks to the judge in a very confident & intelligent manner and then talks with the prisoner on death row. The prisoner on death row is impressed by the person in the business suit and asks: "Are you my court appointed lawyer?" The business person responds: "No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night" (The look of hope on the prisoner's face diminishes and the camera fades to black....) ************************************** So, by staying at a Holiday, even though you are not a lawyer you have an ability to defend someone in court, perform brain surgery, etc etc etc.
