Atheists -- Where did energy originate? (Physics related)?
-
So you may have some background knowledge on my beliefs, I am Southern Baptist. Yes; a fundamentalist. My question is for any atheists that know at least a little about some basic physics fundamentals. Please, only scientific-minded, intelligent answers. We all know that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only manipulated. On earth, living beings with brains are the manipulators, while inanimate objects are the ones being manipulated. Even so, we only have the ability to manipulate energy because we ourselves are already in a constant state of motion. If we had no kinetic energy and all potential, we would be dead and could not do anything because we do not produce our own energy and cannot create any. Our energy, just like everything else on this planet, can be traced to the Sun. While it is truly a source of immense energy and is sustaining itself for a considerable amount of time, it will inevitably die, having no energy left. We can all agree that the Sun received its energy reserves from somewhere, perhaps a God, perhaps a big-bang. ( Perhaps God used a big-bang :-) ) My point then, is where did energy originate, if not from a being that is completely outside and beyond the laws of inertia and energy? Something had to set this universe into its constant state of motion; the same motion that has been wonderfully transferred all the way down to us today. To me, a big-bang just doesn't make sense - energy has to have started somewhere. And since nothing can change its own inertia, some force outside our working knowledge of the world around us had to expend that first bit of kinetic energy.

Answer:
i find it funny that you are trying to prove that GOD IS FOREVER by proving that ENERGY IS NOT. GOD must be made of something himself either energy or whatever.. You cant say if someone cant prove where energy came from that it must mean god made it.. One thing about logic you have to follow it faithfully or you run into CIRCULAR LOGIC ..

where did god come from (physics related)

The Big Bang, and the Creation are roughly comparable ideas, but the latter contains an unnecessary layer of complexity that adds nothing to understanding the mystery. I shall elaborate. Let us suppose that the universe was created by God. That neatly wraps up the question of where the universe came from. However, it leaves us with a new, equally mysterious question - where did God come from? Two popular ideas present themselves: 1) God has always existed 2) God spontaneously appeared, in an act of self-creation But it turns out that both of these contain unnecessary complexity. Instead of saying God has always existed, why not skip a step and say the universe always existed? An infinite, cyclic universe, perhaps. Our theory is thus preserved, but simplified. Or instead of saying God spontaneously appeared, why not skip a step and say the universe spontaneously appeared? Again, our theory is preserved, but simplified. The phrase "do not multiply entities beyond necessity" is certainly applicable here. For instance, if you posit that first God came into existence, then he/she/it created the universe, why stop there? Why not have one god create a second, who creates a third, who creates a fourth, who creates the universe? Each new step is more unnecessary complexity. EDIT: There is nothing inherently "natural" about Newtonian physics that is missing in the rest of cosmology. It's just that we understand Newtonian physics completely, while the other contains further mysteries. As for your complaint that the Big Bang theory fails to address where all the matter/energy came from, you are completely correct. The Big Bang theory doesn't address the issue - it simply states that the universe used to be much smaller, and exploded outward. But there is still no reason to bring mythology into it. And even if there were a reason, there would be no reason to stop at a chain of only 1 god prior to the universe's creation. Why not a chain of 50 gods, or an infinite number? The chain of exactly 1 god seems a very arbitrary, human-imposed constraint on a universe much older than humanity.

The energy could have possibly come from the collision of two membranes separated by a Plank space. Those or other membranes could be the cause of our observed dimensions (length, width, height, spacetime). Look up M-theory for more information on this. Or, that energy could always have existed. Time itself is a result of movement through space...if there is no movement and no space, then there is no time. It's really impossible to know much at all about the pre-Big Bang singularity, as the modern laws of physics break down when confronted with infinite densities.

This really should be in the R&S section if you want answers from Atheists. I know nothing of physics so I can't answer for you, but I'd also post this in R&S.

the sun isn't tapping energy from anywhere.. it is BURNING (well, fusing). it has nuclear potential energy being transformed into thermal and electromagnetic energy. and if energy cannot be created or destroyed, it means it never was created, it just existed.

zero point energy field = vacuum = quantum field = aether field = GOD the vacuum is made up extremely small singularities which channel in energy to sustain matter. Matter came from the ZPE field as energy first, and then coalesced. there is much more to it than this....for specific space-time geometry, currently unknown (as far as being connected to the vacuum) to all of mankind also emerged from the vacuum as instructions to create other lesser energy systems and matter. GOD is usually the easier path to assume....but the energy field is GOD too. This is more on the scientific end....perhaps more atheist, but then again maybe not. If you can respect the entity of energy as God which also has a purpose behind all things, then you have both ideals.

The Time of the Universe came into existence as soon as the Universe was born. The Universe as per Einstein Relativity theory is a Finite closed system. Therefore, its mass content , Energy ,Volume and Time is conserved. That means that the Time period of the Universe ,its mass , Space structure, and Energy were set at its birth . Hence ,its a conservative system which was created to obey the Laws of conservation. Hence, it means that, not even the massive particle light can escape the constricted containment of the Universe. Mass is basically a structure which is composed of atom structures formed by a particular configuration of its components, and a space structure which forms the bulk of its volume. As per Dr. Richard Feynman observation concerning what is Energy , He stated: Scientists do not know exactly what is "Energy''. All we know is that is not an entity. It is basically a process that indicates what is the state of a moving mass . Hence ,when a mass is in motion it is said to have energy. Energy can be defined as the product of the Power that gave mass the motion and the time that the Power was applied. Therefore energy would not exist without time. It is impossible to determine exactly, how the Universe was constructed since no Humans scientist was there to witness the Event. The Basic record concerning the nature of the Universe is The Biblical Record of Creation.

Nobody knows where the "original" energy came from and I question if we ever will know. If you want to attribute it to a God that's fine. But then we will all spend our time debating where God came from. So it really doesn't provide a very satisfactory answer. The problem I have with people attributing the origin of the universe to a God is that next, they think they know how God wants us to behave. I really don't want to go to war to protect the birthplace of Jesus or to "save" the non-believers. I really don't want to be blown up by a suicide bomber that thinks he's on a mission from God and will end up in a heavenly paradise. I really don't want anyone telling me what not to wear, who not to have sex with, or whatever, because its not the way God would want me to behave. So if religous people simply said "God created the universe" and then went about minding their own business I would be fine with that.

"To me, a big-bang just doesn't make sense" well, tough luck, science does not rely on your opinion or whether you agree or not. There is no scientific discovery to date that has required the god hypothesis as an explanation, and energy is not the exception. This energy, like you correctly say, must have come from somewhere. That does not even remotely imply that there is a God and I'm confident that the answer to that question, when it is properly found by science, will not have the word "God" in it. Edit: "So you are suggesting that there might be some force outside of our current knowledge?" There are many things that we don't know yet... but I stress the word "yet". We know exactly what happened in the last 15 billion years down to just a few seconds after the big bang. Heck, that's pretty damn good if you ask me and, for government financed work really, that's good enough. But scientist won't stop at that.
