Where can I buy carbon nanotubes?

Carbon nanotubes?

  • I have a project in Physics. And though I know that carbon nanotubes will probably be used for the )to be) space elevator, could you explain to me the qualities of carbon nanotubes (what makes them so likeable) How is it created and any other little important bits of information? Please keep it very simple because I am only 14: no to complicated. Thanx a lot.

  • Answer:

Carbon nanotube (CNT) is a new form of carbon, configurationally equivalent to two dimensional graphene sheet rolled into a tube. It is grown now by several techniques in the laboratory and is just a few nanometers in diameter and several microns long. CNT can be metallic or semiconducting and offers amazing possibilities to create future nanoelectronics devices, circuits, and computers. CNT exhibits extraordinary mechanical properties: the Young's modulus is over 1 Tera Pascal. It is stiff as diamond. The estimated tensile strength is 200 Giga Pascal. These properties are ideal for reinforced composites, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). The nanomaterials are harvested by being placed in a liquid solvent, such as ethanol, and blasted with ultrasonic waves to loosen them from the wafer surface. Researchers must then sort through the billions of nanowires or nanotubes to find the few that meet the specifications they need for their sensor applications.

What makes them special are their amazing properties. They are stronger than steel and as flexible as plastic, conduct energy better than almost any material ever discovered and can be made from simple raw materials such as methane gas. Here is a simple article about them: http://news.com.com/The+stuff+of+dreams/2009-1008_3-5091267.html?tag=nl

Carbon nanotubes are very strong when you pull on them like a string. They are about 50 times as strong as a steel cable. . They are also rather lightweight. They also have varying electrical properties. Some nanotubes can conduct electricity well while others only conduct electricity a little. Nanotubes are also appealing because they can be chemically altered in many ways which can give them other properties which might be useful. They are usually synthesized my vaporizing graphite using some thing that can produce a lot of energy, like a laser or an electrical arc (which is just a really big spark). The space elevator isn't very practical at the moment but some other possible applications are: They could be used to make molecular sized machines clothes: waterproof tear-resistant cloth fibers sports equipment: Stronger and lighter tennis rackets, bike parts, golf balls, golf clubs, and baseball bats. chemical nanowires, computer circuits, light bulb filament, air pollution filter, water filter .... the list could go on. You can read up on them at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_nanotube#Properties but a lot of that is scientific mumbo jumbo.
