If you were to fly a kite and it got caught in power lines would the string be a good enough conductor..?
-
to electocute you? Say the kite is about 500 yards away and the string is made of nylon or whatever they make kite string out of. Would enough electricity be able to pass through that string to hurt you? Or would the string just catch on fire and break before and electricity can reach you?

Answer:
Let us go back to ben franklin. When he was flying a kite in a thunderstorm, He attached a key to the string, and then tied a silk cord to the string. Touching the key he received a shock, proving the electrical charge from lightning traveled the string. Obviosly the wetness of the string had something to do with it, as dry string will not conduct. Power lines carry a variety of voltages, 7500 to 24,000 volts. Notice that birds can sit on the lines unhurt. They are not connected to ground (return path for electricity). In a commercial area of 14, 000 to 24,000 volts, there may be enough EMF (electromotive force or voltage) to push the current down the string to you and then GROUND. Bottom line - dont take chances, donmt fly kites near power lines.

Yes it would conduct every bit of the energy right bak down to your hand
i would think that the string is attached to the metal (if any metal is in kite)then it would be possible but who really knows unless you try it

In most cases, the string would likely break and not be a good enough conductor to electrocute you, but I wouldn't want to push my luck! You may have found the only spool of highly conductive, super strong kite string!

IF THE STRING IS MADE OF PLASTIC OR DRIED WOOD, THEN IT CANNOT CONDUCT ELECTRICITY. HOWEVER, IF IT IS MADE OF ANY TRACE OF METAL OR WET MATERIAL, THEN IT MAY BE ABLE TO CONDUCT SOME AMOUNT OF ELECTRICITY. OBVIOUSLY OTHER EXTERNAL FACTORS SUCH AS HUMITDIY OR PRECIPITATION WILL ALSO BE A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR, AS WELL AS THE LENGTH OF THE STRING OR YOUR PROXIMITY TO THE ELECTRICAL SOURCE.

Even if the material of the string is an insulator, it is a dielectric and you may have induced charge. That will send a momentary current. If you wear a shoe it willact as an insulator. But our body is a conductor. The string catches fire means there is a current. And current throughout the circuit will be the same. It seems you are under the opinion that far away there will be a current and near the hand there is no current or it takes some time for the current to reach your hand. All these are wrong. Catching fire means the current is high. In a circuit maximum current grows within a fraction of A second wheras fire starts after some seconds. If there is a current it is immediate and through out.

Yes the power in Hightension lines will travel down the line and fry you

Nope. You'd be perfectly safe. The string is an insulator lol.

you say "good enough conductor" like you want to be electrocuted. this is how Edison first start mucking about with energy! ]

the string would just burn where it hit the power line. you would not get hurt
