In a science conversation I made a reference to the inverse square law in magnetism...?
-
... and this fella told me it was a fraud, and that someone at the Schiller Institute had disproven it. I looked up their website, and they are connected to Lyndon LaRouche, the political conspiracy guy. What's with the science and politics mix? Can science from them be trusted? HAS this law, a staple of science classes as far back as I can remember, REALLY been disproven? .

Old Pilot: I am surprised at your answer. Your argument holds true only for magnetic monopoles, which have never been seen. For the magnetic dipoles that are the basis of the magnets we all know and love ( besides the second Maxwell equation), the field varies as the inverse CUBE of the distance, as you well know. No square law in Magnetism! As to your comments about the Schiller Institute, I have no comments!

No, not a reliable site. The Inverse Square Law is alive and well. There is a geometric reason for that to be true. We live in a 4D universe of spacetime. The surface of a sphere in our 3D space increases by the square of the radius ===> Lines of Force must spread out by the square of the radius also ====> Because the same number of lines of Force are being spread over a surface that increases by the square ====> Force must be inversely proportional to the square of the radius. The math requires it. http://www.teacherschoice.com.au/Maths_Library/Area%20and%20SA/area_2.htm OPINION: The Inverse Square Law (ISL) applies to all Non-contact Forces (Electromagnetism (radiation and magnetism) and Gravity are the 2 most common examples. (For the same geometric reason.) It is basic to physics and cosmology. For the folks you list, if you wanted to undermine "Evil Science," attack the ISL . If the ISL is wrong. then EVERYTHING science says about the universe is false. It is that basic. Al Bart is correct and I thank him for catching my misstatement. I was thinking and speaking for point sources. Fact remains, ISL is basic and still applies when sources can be considered points.
