What do you call the rivers that run through Venice, Italy where you can get Gondala rides in?

One of the biggest things I liked about it was the fact that they had rivers running through the city where you can get gondala rides in. What's the proper way of saying "the rivers run through the city" is there a word for that kind of water? and what do you call the man who rows the boat on the Gondala rides?

They are not 'rivers,' they are 'canals.' The Grand Canal runs through the center of Venice and there are subsidiary canals branching out from that. They are all part of the Venetian Lagoon.

The "rivers are called canal... Most commonly known one is the Canale Grande. (Big Canal) and the guy in the gondola is calle a gondolier

First off, i think that would be the most interesting essay ever to write! i would die to go to Italy! I think the rivers are actually called canals. And the people that row the boat are called gondaliers. The Grand Canal is one of the most popular and scenic canals in all of Venice. Some of the smaller canals branch out from it.
