How come although England is level with Newfound Land, it has milder weather than northern US states?
-
England is on a similar latitude to Newfound Land and has mild weather, whereas Northern US states, such as Massachusetts and Michigan have colder weather but are level with Southern Europe. Why does this happen?

Answer:
North Atlantic drift, an oceanic current which comes over from the gulf of Mexico, across the Atlantic to the coast of Scotland. This picks up and carries warm air across the atlantic, thus keeping northern europe relatively mild :) This then dives under the ice sheets of the north pole and cools :) This current and air masses it moves with it is also why Europe often gets hit by the remanents of Hurricanes from America. There are concerns that this current and others could "dry up" with global temperature and environmental changes. hope this helps :)

The gulfstream is a rapid moving warm-water current that travels up from the Gulf of Mexico. It travels along the eastern seaboard of the United States, but it comes away from the US roughly close to Virginia and starts to move across the Atlantic. The Gulf Stream hit the United Kingdom dead center and wraps around the entire Isles. The UK is therefore surrounded by very warm water compared to most of the north Atlantic, and has milder temperatures that most places of equal latitude. There is a current that runs from the Carribean all the way up to England that caries warm water allong with air to make the milder weather

Climate does not depend solely on latitude. Ocean currents play a part and the Gulf Stream affects the UK by giving the west coast a warmer climate than the east coast, and certainly a warmer one than other countries in northern Europe. The Uk also experiences a wetter general climate than Northern US or Europe. But the UK seldom has hurricanes or severe tornadoes. It does have cold winters but these are nothing like as severe as in northern US or Canada, and usually very damp. A good source on weather & climate would help you on this.

Because of the "Gulf stream" (a warm oceanic current which brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico to Western Europe).

The gulf stream(north atlantic drift) brings warm water north from the equator keeping the British weather mostly temperate
