Is Scotland a country or a state?

Is Scotland a state or a country? A country? It's not on the map?

  • Answer:

It is a country but it can be confusing because it's part of a kingdom, i.e. the United Kingdom. It's not a silly question. It's actually a good one because although it DOES have its own parliament, it has limited powers and most major laws for Scotland still have to be passed through The Houses of Parliament and Lords in London.. which is quite an unusual process for a country to have. Lastly, Scotland and Wales don't always appear on maps of the UK but rather our country will be shown as incorporating the rest as one kingdom. Great Britain is often simply shown as one island on less detailed maps.

Scotland is a separate nation (like wales, england, ireland). It has its own soccer team, but is politically a part of the UK. It has its own parliament with some power to manage local affairs.
