Why must a unicellular organism be versatile?

Why size may influence the growth rate and survival of a cell or a unicellular organism?

  • In Biology, why size may influence the growth rate and survival of a cell or a unicellular organism?

  • Answer:

Increased size will increase the distance nutrients have travel from one end of the organism to the other. The transport processes will have slowed down, so growth is slowed down. Increased size will so increase the organism's surface area, making it more exposed to light etc. If the organism is photosynthetic then it will benefit from increased surface area. However it may also dry out quicker as a large surface area increases the rate of dehydration.
