  I presently work in the hematology lab, where I study people's blood cells. When your doctor orders a complete blood count, I analyze your red cells, white cells, and platelets. An abnormal white cell count would prompt me to review your blood slide to classify the white cells into groups, called a manual differential. Many diseases can be revealed during this process, from infections to leukemia. If leukemia is suspected, I will assist the physician in performing a bone marrow aspirate, make slides and stain for pathologist review. A lab tech (Medical Technologist) is often an underappreciated member of the healthcare team because of the lack of patient contact, but in actuality, there are greater education requirements to work in the lab than most other depts in the hospital (including nursing). Remember, 85% of a medical chart is lab results, so appreciate a tech today!
