usually farmers spray insecticide. That food goes to the grocery store. When you buy it you're expected to wash off any residue "before you eat it". For smaller gardens people try to use things like marigolds and mint and special bugs and praying mantises and bees and other things to keep their gardens organic.

The chemical can break down, concentrate or be filtered naturally. Some insecticides are organic and natural, while others are man made and can be quite hard on the ecosystem. Alot depends on the chemical(s) used as well as the location it is used (soil type, levelness of terrain, ect..) or if it is about to rain and such. But in the end if you are wondering if you eat some of it, I would have to say yes. That is why the FDA says to wash your food before you eat it.
