  In transcription, you can imagine some DNA unwinding, and then individual nucleotides of RNA attaching to the exposed portion of the DNA. Don't let that confuse you! You know the capital letters people put when they talk about DNA? You might have noticed when they put something like ATTCGCG. That's just the the sequence of nucleotides on the DNA! Now, we're still in transcription. Once the RNA nucleotides bond with the nucleotides on the DNA, an RNA strand is formed. This specific RNA is called "mRNA," since it's messenger RNA. After the RNA strand is formed, it will leave the nucleus and head to a ribosome. Now we're talking about translation. See, once the mRNA reaches the ribosome, it will find something else called "tRNA." The tRNA (transfer RNA) will have things called "amino acids" on them, and that's important. In the most simple sense, the tRNA will bond with the mRNA, which will result in amino acids lining up next to each other, which will form a protein. You see, proteins are made up of amino acids, so it should make sense to you that this results in the formation of a protein. Remember what we said about the DNA sequence? Well, the tRNA has sequences, too. So does the mRNA. There are certain things on the tRNA called "anticodons," which are simply three nucleotides in a "group." So, if the tRNA's anticodon was UAU, then it would be attracted to a specific codon on the mRNA with a sequence of AUA. Oh, yes, the mRNA has things called "codons." These codons can pretty much be thought of as anticodons, only they're on mRNA and they attract the tRNA.
