Eseravol has it right! Digestion is the chemical breakdown of large, insoluble molecules to small, soluble ones. Chewing by the teeth has nothing to do with digestion. It is mere physical process that breaks the food down into smaller pieces to increase surface area and mix saliva into the food. Saliva makes the food slippier and easier to swallow and also contains salivary amylase, produced from the salivary glands. Salivary amylase breaks down starch into the sugar maltose. The food is then passed to the back of the mouth by the tongue forming a rounded ball called a bolus. The bolus is passed down the oesophagus or foodpipe by contraction and relaxation of muscles. This wave of muscular action is called peristalsis and continues throughout the whole digestive system. A band of muscle at the bottom of the oesophagus, the cardiac sphincter, relaxes and the bolus enters the stomach. Here peristalsis continues to churn up the food and mix it together with hydrochloric acid and pepsin, both produced from glands in the stomach. The hydrochloric acid creates the correct pH for pepsin (pH2) and also kills bacteri athat enter with the food. Pepsin is a protease - an enzyme that digests proteins - and it breaks the long chain proteins into shorter chain peptides. After some time the food is passed through another sphincter, the pyloric sphincter, into the small intestine. The first parts is called the duodenum and here bile is added from the Gall Bladder. Bile is produced in the liver from excess amino acids and is stored in the gall bladder. It passes into the Bile duct and empties into the small intestine. Bile is a collection of salts and not an enzyme. Bile emulsifies fats - breaks large fat globules into smaller fat droplets - this increases the surface area for enzyme action. Bile also neutralisesthe acid contents of the stomach and makes it alkaline. This is so that the intestinal enzymes can work at their optimum pH. The pancreas also adds Pancreatic Juice which is a collection of amylases, proteases and lipases - enzymes that digest carbohydrates, proteins and fats respectively. The food moves on into the second part of the small intestine - the ileum. Here more of the same eznymes are added to help complete digestion of the three main food groups. Carbohydrates beocme glucose, Proteins become amino acids and Fats become fatty acids and Glycerol. The ileum is long and has a surface that is covered with finger-like projections called villi, These increase the surface area for absorption of the soluble end products. Glucose and amino acids enter into blood capillaries that surround the villus while fatty acids and glycerol enter a central space in the villus called a lacteal. This is part of the lymphatic system that carries lymph fluid rich in fatty acids and glycerol away to join the blood circulation at a later point. Digestion is complete at this point and the remaining indigestible material enters the large intestine where water and salts are absorbed into the blood. The remaining material is compacted in the rectum by peristalsis unti it is evauated throug the anus.

You eat, and you ****, then you eat again, and **** again and it keeps going in circles. You chew the stuff, amalyase breaks down food in mouth and help go down to the stomach. Gastric acid breaks food matter down further. In your small intestine polymers gets broken down into monomers and into essentials that gets absorbed. **** stays in ur large intestine until you go to the loo.
